We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Diane Rose a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Diane, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later
I have loved photography since I was little. I remember when I was gifted my first film camera at age 8. I would line up my stuffed animals and model horses and have “photoshoots” with them. As a freshman in high school, I took a film photography class and learned how to develop film in the dark room and it all felt so magical watching the photos appear on the paper. My teacher for that class told me one day that he really saw potential in my skills and my “eye for photography”. That’s when I knew I wanted to be a professional photographer.
But as I approached the time to apply for college, I kept being told that photography was great, but that I needed to get a “real job” And go to school for a “real career”. I was made to believe that my dream to be a professional photographer was not “realistic”.
So I went to school and got my degree as a physical therapist assistant. I did that for many years until I was a mom with 2 young kids at home. I decided to stop working in PT soo could be at home with my kids. And that’s when I decided I would start my photography business. For the last 10 years I have slowly been able to build my business to what it is today. It has taken a lot of courage, effort and failure to get to where I am.
I wish I had had more confidence in myself as a young adult and not allowed the opinions and fears of others stop me from pursuing what I love. I wish I had gone to photography school and not had to learn everything on my own. But, honestly, I’m just grateful I’ve made it as far as I have. I’m doing what I love to do and not everyone gets to say that.

Diane, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My business is named Sunsprite Studio. It has significance to me because “sunsprite” Is a variety of rose and my last name is Rose. Also, “sunsprites” are also known as light fairies, and as a photographer I use and play with light to create my art.
I love to photograph many things, but the focus of my business is portrait and dance photography. I love to photograph portraits because I love connecting with people. I love getting to know my clients and capturing their uniqueness and their true self. To show them the way that others see them. I love to keep my photoshoot relaxed.
Dance photography is captivating and beautiful. It is thrilling to freeze time and movement during a dance and show the strength, grace and elegance of the body in motion. It’s powerful to feel emotion and movement from a still photo.
I prefer to do my photoshoot outdoors because this world has so many beautiful places, why take photos in a studio in front of a blank canvas, when you can be by the ocean or in a field of wildflowers?
A recent accomplishment I am very proud of is having one my dance photos featured on the cover of a magazine in Paris, France and one of my portrait photos featured on the cover of a magazine in London, UK.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I started my photography business 2012 in Boston, MA. I built a great business and had amazing clients. In December 2020 my family moved to London, UK. It was a big shift for my family and my business. But, over time my business began to grow and I was feeling happy with the progress I had made.. Then in June 2022 by husband was offered an amazing job opportunity in California, USA. (sort of out of the blue). In July 2022 we left the UK and in September 2022 we moved into our home in California. Since then I’ve been working to shift, pivot and rebuild my business here in a new area. It definitely has its challenges. But I know with hard work and a bit of luck, I’ll get things moving along smoothly.
