We recently connected with Diana Staver and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Diana thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
Since I was a small girl, I have always been a creative person. I liked to analyze people, how are they dressed, and what hairstyle & makeup they have. Whenever in school there would be an event like a holiday or party, all the girls would ask me to do their hair, because I was so good at it. My first full-time job was working in an office, constantly having to deal with paperwork. Later, I worked in various domains. While I was getting paid for it, it did not make me feel happy and having in a purpose in my job.
Once I found my calling and started working as a hairstyle and makeup artist, I never looked back.
My work is my passion.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Usually, in this profession, people have narrow expertise. They specialize in haircuts, hairstyles, or makeup. Also, many usually work with either men or women. I, on the other hand, have bettered myself in all these areas, so I can provide my customers with a whole range of services, saving them the hassle to drive around and work with different people to get their final results. Having just 1 stylist doing all the services also provides the additional benefit of a more harmonious result, since they envision it during all different stages, and they work with that final goal in mind all the time. Sometimes I have the whole family (dad, mom, and kid(s)) coming over for various services.
Also, I can recommend to the customers what haircut/hairstyle/makeup would better match their face contours, hair type, and even what they will wear if it is a special occasion.
Also, I am fluent in 3 languages (Russian, Romanian, and English). This enables me to work with a broader audience. Sometimes, people are not able to express their desires in English, if they are non-native speakers, which may lead to unexpected/unwanted results, making them not happy in the end.
Another area I am working on is teaching the basics of makeup to regular, non-professional people, so they are able to do their makeup when they have no time/money to go to a professional makeup artist.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
As Dostoevsky said in one of his greatest novels: “Beauty will save the world”. I am just doing my part in this greater goal.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I have worked as a stylist in 3 different countries now, and in 2 different states in the US. Every time when I relocate, I have to start from scratch: learn a new language and culture, get a local license, build a customer base, etc. This is really hard and time-consuming, but I never gave up on achieving my goals.
