Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Diana Short. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Diana, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.
My first client was actually someone I’d gone to for a reading. This was in 2017 and I’d had an experience with a friend where I knew things that she never shared with me. In that moment I realized that I really had the ability to sense energy beyond what was in front of me, so I began to practice to see if it was a fluke or something lasting. I practiced on my husband, sister and with other friends. Once I realized I could tune into spirit regularly I booked a reading with a lady in Australia. I asked her if I should pursue doing readings professionally. She conducted the reading and stated that from what she could see I should pursue this work professionally. Then to my surprise she asked for my PayPal information and offered to pay me to do a reading for her. I begged her to please keep her money and let me do it for free just in case I messed up! This was someone who had decades of experience under her belt so I was nervous. She insisted on paying me and sent me a really sweet donation for a reading. At that time I was accustomed to saying whatever came up and not being asked questions, so I started sharing different details that were coming through. Then she asked me two questions which I happily answered. After receiving the answers, she explained that no one had ever been able to describe her situation the way I had and she wondered why I was questioning my ability to do this work. She was so excited and encouraged me to start right away. She provided a website I could use immediately without having to pay a fee for my first five listings and other information to get me started. So, to my surprise I went to her for guidance and she in turn received guidance from me and became my first official client!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Diana and I am a Psychic Medium and Podcast host of Half Medium: Psychic Girl in a Material World. My company is Divine Pearls of Insight, LLC but I am known as Divine Pearls Medium. I provide readings for clients using my psychic senses of clairvoyance (seeing), clairaudience (hearing) and others. I connect clients to loved ones who have crossed over as well as provide insight on everyday questions regarding love, career, family and more. I got into this work for a couple of reasons. One reason being that I realized I had an ability to help people move beyond their current challenges simply by tuning into Spirit and sharing messages. When I realized I could do this I sought council from someone who had decades of experience and asked her if this was something I needed to pursue professionally. She confirmed that I should and helped me get started. I grew up around my mom and God mother who both had spiritual gifts, but I didn’t totally realize that I had the same ability until I was an adult. When I first received insight for a friend I was working for an insurance company and really at a very low point in my life. I could feel with everything in me that I was NOT doing what I was meant to do, but I wasn’t sure what direction to go in. The only thing I knew was I had to help people in a meaningful way and that insurance job was not the way. As soon as I began receiving insight from Spirit for others I never looked back, I knew I was beginning to fulfill my life’s purpose. Clients have often said that they feel held during my readings and I believe this is because I am very intentional about providing insight that is rooted in love. This is not to say that sometimes tough messages don’t come through, but I am very intentional about sharing the messages in a way that helps the client process the information in a positive way. For example, I’ve seen a client’s loved one pass in a terrible car accident. The image was disturbing, but I could feel that this young man didn’t suffer which provided comfort to my client. I absolutely love what I do and I am passionate about helping as many people that I can while I have breath in my body.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn is that social media is a sign of business success. I’m an 80’s baby so I came up at a time when the internet was just getting started. I also remember when Facebook launched and being a college student was a requirement to join. Oh, have things changed. I’m bringing this up because while social media can be important to business growth it is not the deciding factor of business success, hence prior to Facebook/Meta and many other social media platforms businesses have been and still are thriving without it. I have worked tirelessly to build my social media following and while I have gained some clients from my efforts, the majority of my clientele has always come from good old-fashioned word-of-mouth. The amount of pressure I have put on myself to grow my following has brought on many tears from feeling inadequate and like I was doing something wrong. I now understand that the success of my business is dependent upon the quality of the work I provide each individual that comes to me for guidance. When I focus on being and doing my best I am able to connect with more people. I appreciate any growth I have online, but I no longer put heavy pressure on myself to have certain numbers.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
There are a few things I’ve done well to grow my clientele. Above all, I believe providing quality readings to clients is most effective. By doing good work, my clients feel inspired to tell their friends and family about me which helps me grow. Another strategy that has helped me is connecting with others in my industry. I’ve been blessed to connect with other readers who would shout me out on their platforms, and this helped me garner new followers and clients. Lastly, I would say being consistently active on Instagram has helped me tremendously. I’ve met so many people from across the world who I have come to love and who genuinely love me in return. Being active and accessible has created a level of trust that keeps my clientele steady and growing.
