Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Diana Rosa. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Diana, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I grew up in a creative environment. Many musicians in my family were rehearsing and playing . As a child I enjoyed making the dresses for my dolls. From 7 to 11 years old I was doing extracurricular activities in the school: singing and painting.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Coming from a long line of professional musicians, performers and music teachers, I credit my first exposure to the arts to my maternal relatives, or as I calls it, the “artistic side” of the family. As a child, I remember growing up in a house full of music, surrounded by relatives who played in bands or sang in groups. So, I developed my fervent desire to create from a very young age, taking music lessons at school to hone my skills as a vocalist and learn to play the piano and guitar.
It wasn’t until I was seven years old that I picked up a paintbrush and started to explore a different artistic medium, one that would ultimately inform my trajectory as a lifelong visual artist.
I studied Art History at the Oriente University(1989-1994) in the province of Santiago de Cuba, Cuba, where I graduated a thesis in Art Curation. After graduation I worked as an art curator for several years(1994-2000)at the Contemporary Art Centre in Holguin, Cuba. I decided to make the journey to Canada in 2001. Despite the country bearing little resemblance to my tropical homeland, I quickly discovered Canada was full of its own charms, with different, yet equally picturesque landscapes to paint and fascinating people to meet.
In 2003 I started to exhibit my work around Ontario and USA in art in a parks, art fairs and solo exhibitions in art galleries.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The Art World is a very difficult journey. I always dream to create, since I was 4 years old, I used to see my family member in Cuba dedicating their life to music. Some of them where music teacher and performers. I think that I always believed because I’m in love with the arts. I always will trust the real emotions and honest intention of an artist. In the beginning we use to buy art to decorate, but eventually everything changed and the predominant factor was not only the Aesthetic but also the investment value and predictions in the future. That’s what give the oxygen to the art industry: taste and value.
My path as a visual artist have been unpredictable, like for any other artist. I don’t have a time to complain, continue with the support of my husband and never give up. Always feeling confident that tomorrow will be better. I don’t want fame, but just show my creation to the World.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I like to express love and unity. At the end, we are coming to make a difference and live in harmony with plans and animals in this planet Earth. I take what is the most personal and assume it is universal. I use my own experiences and emotional responses, and turns them into a narrative work that suggests to the viewer a peek into their own life. The stories I tell are about inner worlds revealed – the things that we are supposed to talk and feel, about our bodies, our families, and our life’s choices
All elements drive my creativity along with a light touch of the paintbrush, feeling of peace and sense of a place. I strive to re-create the peaceful, contemporary landscape in my art to expand upon the beautiful palette that nature provides us.
