We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Diana Rojas a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Diana, thanks for joining us today. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
Oh Gosh! I’d never forget my first client. Her name was Asia and I was SUPER nervous and excited at the same time. I had been in training with another esthetician for about 2 weeks before I took any real clients. I remember being very happy the night before that I couldn’t even sleep LOL. I woke up that morning and was driving to the salon then my stomach was turning I felt as I was shaking! I was nervous and excited all at once. I was nervous because I was doing eyebrow threading and getting paid for it for the first time ever. I didn’t want to mess up anyones brows! I got her by promoting myself and posting on social media that I was accepting clients for eyebrows. She was my first client and first dollars my business made since then I lost count of how many brows I’ve done.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Diana Rojas I am from Oaxaca, Mexico and I came to the United States when I was 5yrs old. I’ve been in Atlanta, Georgia most my life. We lived in Pennsylvania for 1yr and we didn’t like it at all so we ended moving back. When I was in high school I had pretty bad skin. I was always finding ways to try to “cure” my skin. I was always interested in skin care and why breakouts happen. I had my son right after high school so I dedicated all my time to him I put my goals on hold so I could focus on being a mother. I started Esthetician school when he started Pre-K. That’s the only time I had to go to school since I was a single mother. I was working 2 jobs, going to school, and being a mother. It was definitely challenging but I knew it would all be worth it one day. I knew I was going to become a licensed esthetician one day and was going to be doing something that I love.
Diana’s Touch was founded summer of 20202 after being an apprentice at The Brow Girl. I learned everything brows such as eyebrow lamination, eyebrow tinting, eyebrow threading & eyebrow waxing. Leg wax, arm wax, Brazilian wax, underarm wax.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
My most effective strategy for growing my clientele has definitely been social media. In the beauty industry now days many people like to SEE what they’re paying for first. I try to consistently post different services that I do and reels have became super popular now. Another strategy that I used when I first started was Groupon and creating kits for my clients. Showed them that I was thankful for them and made them feel very special. People LOVE to feel special! They would also refer me to their family & friends and that also has helped me grow my clientele.
What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
YES! I was working full time as a lawyer assistant during the day and in the morning I was working at a daycare. I had classes every Wednesday. I decided to become an apprentice at The Brow Girl in Sugar Hill Ga while still working at the daycare. So being there was my side hustle I would go there Friday-Sunday. Keep in mind I was still taking care of my son so doing all this I had to do it around his schedule. I was very excited to be able to work in my industry but I didn’t have enough clients yet to quit my full time job so I had to balance the both the best I could. After working there for a couple months and had a decent clientele I decided to quit my full time job and take a leap of faith and dedicate majority of my time learning and growing within my career. It was honestly the best decision I did! I haven’t went back to working a full time job since 2020 and am so proud of myself for not giving up even when things became hard. If I wouldn’t of had taken that leap of faith I wouldn’t of been where I am today!
