We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Diana DeFatta a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Diana , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start with what makes profitability in your industry a challenge – what would you say is the biggest challenge?
As a wedding photographer, there are several challenges to profitability in the industry. One of the biggest challenges is the perception of high profitability from the outside. While it may seem lucrative, there are various factors that make it challenging to maintain profitability.
Firstly, the competition in the wedding photography market is fierce. With a low barrier to entry, many photographers enter the industry, increasing the supply of services. This leads to price competition and a constant need to differentiate oneself to attract clients.
Additionally, wedding photography requires significant investment in equipment, software, and marketing. Cameras, lenses, lighting equipment, and editing software can be expensive, and regular upgrades are often necessary to stay competitive. These costs can eat into profits, especially for photographers starting out or those facing financial constraints.
Furthermore, wedding photographers face seasonal fluctuations in demand. The wedding season tends to be concentrated in certain months, resulting in feast-or-famine cycles. During peak times, photographers may have to work long hours, while off-seasons can be financially challenging.
Moreover, there is a risk of plagiarism in the industry, where photographers may face the unethical use of their work without proper attribution or compensation. Protecting intellectual property can be time-consuming and expensive, adding additional burdens to profitability.
In conclusion, the perception of high profitability in the wedding photography industry can be misleading. Intense competition, equipment costs, seasonal fluctuations, plagiarism concerns, and the need for sustainability all pose challenges to maintaining profitability in this line of work.
To overcome these challenges, wedding photographers must differentiate themselves through their unique style, exceptional customer service, and professional reputation. They should carefully evaluate their pricing strategies to ensure fair compensation for their work while remaining competitive. Embracing sustainable practices not only meets client demands but also provides opportunities for marketing differentiation and long-term profitability.

What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
Once upon a time, my life took an unexpected turn that led me down a path I never imagined. Like many others, I had a stable corporate job in the healthcare industry. It provided security and a sense of purpose, or so I thought. Little did I know that a pivotal moment awaited me, forever altering the course of my journey.
In the tumultuous year of 2020, the world was faced with unprecedented challenges. Unfortunately, the healthcare sector was not spared, and I found myself among the unfortunate individuals whose jobs were impacted. Losing my corporate position was disorienting and left me pondering the next steps in my life.
Photography had always been a passionate hobby of mine. It was an escape, a creative outlet that allowed me to capture the world through my lens. But I never had a concrete plan to pursue it full-time. However, as fate would have it, the universe whispered in my ear, urging me to take a leap of faith into the world of photography.
Without hesitation, I decided to dive headfirst into this newfound calling. I immersed myself in learning, honing my skills, and connecting with fellow photographers and mentors. With every click of the shutter, I felt a sense of purpose and fulfillment that surpassed anything I had experienced before.
As I poured my heart and soul into my craft, the universe rewarded my dedication with a series of milestones that forever changed the trajectory of my career. One of the most memorable moments was booking my first destination wedding. The opportunity to travel to breathtaking locations and capture love stories against stunning backdrops was a dream come true.
But it didn’t stop there. Fate continued to smile upon me, granting me the chance to photograph a wedding at one of my top bucket list venues. It was a surreal experience, standing amidst the grandeur of a place that had always captured my imagination. These milestones affirmed my decision to follow my passion, reminding me that the journey I embarked upon was meant to be.
Today, as I reflect on the path that led me here, I am overwhelmed with gratitude. I am grateful for the opportunities I have been given, the couples who trust me to capture their most intimate moments, and the sheer joy that comes with being a part of their wedding day.
Being a wedding photographer is so much more than a job. It’s an incredible privilege to witness the love, joy, and raw emotions that unfold on these sacred occasions. To be entrusted with capturing these fleeting moments and transforming them into timeless memories is a responsibility I hold dear to my heart.
Every click of my camera is infused with passion, creativity, and a deep appreciation for the beauty of love. I am grateful for the winding path that brought me here and for the chance to be a storyteller, capturing the essence of each couple’s unique love story.
As I continue to embark on this remarkable journey, I am filled with excitement and a sense of purpose. I look forward to connecting with more couples, capturing their love in its purest form, and preserving their cherished memories for generations to come.
This is my calling, my art, and my life’s work. And I couldn’t be more grateful to have found my true passion through the unexpected twists and turns that life presented me.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
One of the most rewarding aspects of being an artist and a creative is the privilege to create and immortalize moments in time for couples. It’s an honor to capture the essence of their wedding day, allowing them to look back and instantly be transported to the memories and emotions of that special day. My goal is not only to provide beautiful memories but also to enable them to relive every single moment—the raw, unseen, and emotional ones, as well as the picture-perfect ones. Through my lens, I strive to encapsulate the entire spectrum of their love story, ensuring that each image holds the power to evoke cherished memories and spark joy for years to come.
