We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Diamond Young . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Diamond below.
Diamond , appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
When I first realized that I wanted to take art seriously, is when I first started becoming emotional over the artwork itself. before my junior year of college, I was creating work that was very dramatic because I loved bright colors and having the subjects become unrealistic and supernatural in a sense that showed superiority. I knew that it hit my creative mind the way I enjoyed but I didn’t have any attachment towards my artwork. I had a project that dealt with the idea of creating artwork that pertained to my grandmother because I came across a photo that related to the project. it wasn’t until I began the process of mark-making that helped me realize that I was healing myself in ways I never knew were possible from the passing of my grandmother. Ever since then, I made it apparent that my creations are now helping heal myself and others that I love to hopefully get them through a rough time in their life that is still in effect.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a proud Washington DC native who makes artwork that pertains to myself, friends, and family that helps them and myself get through traumatic events. I also am slowly going more into the aspect of creating work that falls into fashion and ghetto luxury. I think what sets me apart from others is my storytelling. I realize that my storytelling catches people’s attention while also learning something new that is happening in today’s society. The use of colors in my subject pieces shows a variety of how I portray people of color through various stages of skin tone. what also sets me apart is the stylistic mark-making that I create on canvases that portray texture fabric and rendering. I am most proud of the strong portfolio that I’ve created to help me continue on the journey of my artistic and successful opportunities.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is simply being understood while also coming across others who feel like your artwork has helped them to be more understood. Creating pieces of my family and friends has helped me to become closer to them and also created such an impact on connection.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
The particular goal I am driving towards is becoming a global artist. creating an impact for people across the world and becoming more educated while meeting others through that journey. I hope to also come across other creatives who inspired me to create artwork while also being an inspiration to them.
