We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Diamond V a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Diamond, thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I have always known that I wanted to do music from a young age. From what I can remember I believe I was around five years old when I saw my first instrument (a trumpet) that my brother had when he was in the 8th grade. I had become fascinated with the trumpet and would even try to attempt to play it. Music has always a big part of me and who I am. I didn’t really have too many family members that had a big musical background so a lot of what I saw or heard was from listening to some of the music that my parents would play. When I got in sixth grade my mother forced me to take piano lessons which I am very thankful that she did because if it wasn’t for her pushing me to do so I wouldn’t have the musical knowledge that I have today. I have always been fascinated with how things work and the background aspect of music and the creative process so it’s always been a no-brainer that I would make music my career. Before I knew what producing music or engineering was I actually was already doing it and just didn’t know. Sometimes I would record using a computer microphone, some old speakers, and a Casio keyboard not knowing that I was making some of my first beats. I often times would wonder how or why I was so interested and obsessed with music. One day my mother told me that when she was pregnant with me I would move so much that she would put headphones on her stomach and play music and that was the only thing to calm me down so I guess you can say it’s in my DNA.
Diamond, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Diamond V I am a music producer and recording engineer. I got into the industry by dedicating myself and my time to perfecting my craft and networking with the right people. The services that I provide include recording sessions, mixing of various audio tracks, engineering live sound for different concerts and venues, as well as creating instrumentals for artist, TV/Film, and Businesses. There are a lot of things that I can list that sets me apart from others but I never look at myself as being in competition or comparing myself to anybody else. I am ME. But if I have to say something in regard to the question at hand I would say me being a female music producer and engineer from Memphis, who has become a GrammyU Mentor, and has a degree and certification in Engineering is something that has set me apart from others. Whenever I am working with Artist I try to create positive vibes only. I want to give them as much beneficial information as I possibly can to help further their career. I am passionate and I enjoy what I do so whenever I can be of help to them that is always the end goal. The main thing that I am most proud of is the fact that no matter how many obstacles I had to face I never gave up. There were times when I didn’t see the light at the end of the tunnel but for some reason, I knew I had to keep pushing and keep going to pursue my dreams.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I want to say knowing exactly how to properly network is something that I wish I knew earlier in my creative journey. Since I started I have gotten better each time I attend certain events where a lot of networking is involved. Me being introverted at times networking can sometimes become overwhelming or exhausting but you have to push through in order to get the results that you want. Sometimes I have been in positions where I’m not in the mood to Network but I do it anyway and I have gotten some of the best opportunities from that.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is when I am able to use my platform and knowledge to give back to my community. Right now I have the privilege of teaching the youth about music production at the boys and girls club of Memphis. Seeing their faces light up when they enter into the studio or into that creative space where they know they can freely express themselves always brings me so much joy. No matter what I do or where I go I try my hardest to make sure that I have some type of impact on any person that I come in contact with. Having someone look to you for information or advice regarding your role as a creative and you being able to show your love and passion for it and they listen and are appreciative is the best feeling ever.
