We recently connected with Diamond Frost and have shared our conversation below.
Diamond, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
My entrepreneurial journey started Summer 2018. What started as a hobby soon turned into a passion. Being raised by a single mother, while my father has been wrongfully incarcerated over the last 22 years, I have been born with a unique drive and hustle while also sharing my testimony. I was able to start doing nails out of my dorm at my alma mater, Old Dominion University as a full-time student there as well as in nail school. I managed to receive my license in my field and then a degree in Communications and Marketing.
Over the course of time I have been blessed to teach hundreds of other nail technicians on the skill and technique of my craft. Most importantly, I started an e-commerce business selling custom press-on nails during the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic and took the money and reinvested into my business, selling acrylic powder and nail tips.
Two years later, I was able to make history as the first black-owned and woman owned nail supply in the state of Virginia. I expanded into a suite for my store and dominate my area being that I am an active nail tech in the industry who understands the needs and wants for the community.
Diamond, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Diamond Frost, I am 23 years old and I am from Chesapeake, VA. I was blessed with the talent of doing nails back in 2018. I did not realize at the time that picking up a nail brush would change the rest of my life. I provide a range of nail services and I also own a nail supply store. What sets me apart is that I own the first black-owned nail supply store in the state of Virginia. I am most proud of that as well as my ability to beat the statistics of my upbringing.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Back in January 2022, I was located in a small suite selling nail supplies. The person at the time I was subleasing from was a friend but that soon turned sour as the business relationship continued. From a disagreement about a candle, yes a candle, I was given 30 days notice to vacate. At this point I had to make the decision to put my inventory in storage and stick to e-commerce, or find another location. Long story short, I found a store front in the area and the owner of the shopping center was a family friend. I was blessed to sign the lease and have it as mine. However, I would not know that challenges to come in the near future. This storefront was something I literally manifested in a personal notebook. I had to understand that with big dreams, will come bigger responsibilities. I had to learn that the old structure I had balancing my hectic career would now need to change for the better.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clients has been via google, instagram, as well as word of mouth advertising.
