We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Di “Amber” Li. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Di “Amber” below.
Di “Amber”, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I believe that the key to success is constantly jumping out of our comfort zones and challenging ourselves. It’s about embracing discomfort and growth. For example, I’m naturally a more reserved person, but I’ve learned that networking is essential in the film industry. By pushing myself to attend events, engage with new people, and build connections, I’ve been able to create opportunities that wouldn’t have been possible otherwise.
One particular instance that stands out is when I attended a film set where I didn’t know anyone. It was intimidating, but I forced myself to strike up conversations and introduce myself to other filmmakers. Not only did I make valuable connections, but I also gained insights and feedback that helped me improve my craft.
This experience reinforced my belief that stepping out of our comfort zones is crucial for personal and professional growth. Each challenge we face and overcome shapes us, making us more resilient and better prepared for future opportunities.

Di “Amber”, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi, I’m Amber Li, a cinematography student at Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film and Media Arts. My journey into the film industry began with a deep love for visual storytelling. I was always fascinated by how films could evoke emotions and tell complex stories through images. This passion led me to pursue a career in cinematography, where I could bring stories to life through the lens.
I’ve had the privilege of working as the Director of Photography on several short films, including “Just the Two of Us,” “Asmodeus,” and “Ashes to Ashes.” In addition to my work as a DP, I also specialize as a colorist and an assistant camera (AC). These roles allow me to ensure that the visual aesthetics of a film align with the director’s vision, enhancing the storytelling experience.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Building a unique perspective about my work has been crucial in establishing my reputation within the market. In cinematography, it’s important to develop a distinctive style and approach that sets you apart from others. I’ve always aimed to create visuals that not only support the narrative but also bring a fresh and innovative perspective to each project.
One way I’ve done this is by experimenting with different techniques and always pushing the boundaries of traditional filmmaking. Whether it’s through unique camera angles, innovative lighting setups, or creative color grading, I strive to bring a fresh vision to every film I work on. This commitment to originality and excellence has helped me stand out and gain recognition in the industry.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative is seeing that I’ve made images that no one has made before. There’s something incredibly fulfilling about creating unique visuals that stand out and leave a lasting impression. It’s about pushing the boundaries of what’s possible and exploring new ways to tell stories through the lens.
When I see my work come to life on screen, knowing that it’s original and innovative, it gives me a deep sense of accomplishment. It’s this constant drive to create something fresh and impactful that keeps me passionate about my craft.
