We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dhani Del Toro. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dhani below.

Dhani, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?

I first learned how to dance when I was 11 years old by watching YouTube videos of my favorite dancers. I taught myself by repeatedly watching these videos until I got the choreography right. As I grew older and began to take dance more seriously, I eventually found myself in studios and taking classes. The most essential skills I developed were self-discipline, consistency, and confidence. Without these skills, I wouldn’t be the dancer I am today.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

I am a dancer and choreographer based in Fresno, CA. I have trained in various foundational styles and choreography for the past 15 years. I am a co-founder of a dance crew called Underground Dynasty. Since 2017, our crew has organized many dance events for our community, including dance battles and classes.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?

Being a creative can be both challenging and fulfilling. Personally, I find the most rewarding aspect is when someone connects with art. Whether it’s a painting, poem, movie, or dance piece, evoking emotions and creating a meaningful experience for someone is truly amazing.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?

As our dance crew grows and evolves we have always kept our mission goal the same. We are dedicated to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment where dancers of all backgrounds, styles, and skill levels can come together to celebrate the transformative power of dance.
