We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Deyanira Martinez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Deyanira below.
Hi Deyanira, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
The most meaningful project I’ve ever worked on is, without a doubt, the bilingual book series Mujeres que se atreven y superan límites and Women Who Dare and Overcome Limits. This series has given me the incredible opportunity to showcase and highlight the inspiring stories of Latinas from all corners of the globe. The journey of creating this series is deeply personal and close to my heart.
I am privileged to be surrounded by strong, resilient Latina women who faced immense challenges and still achieved their dreams. However, I noticed their stories were often overlooked or underrepresented in the media. This realization ignited my passion to create a platform where their voices could be heard and their achievements celebrated.
The idea for the series started small. I wanted to document the journeys of Latinas who broke barriers and exceeded expectations in various fields. I convinced my friend and business partner, Alba Letycia, to join me in this adventure. We immediately reached out to women in our network, and soon, we were connected to a diverse group of individuals from different parts of the world. Each story added a new layer of depth, revealing the unique struggles and triumphs these women experienced.
This project is significant to me because it goes beyond sharing stories. It aims to inspire and empower other Latinas to pursue their dreams and recognize their potential. We also support new authors with editorial coaching and publishing services. By highlighting these incredible women, I hope to challenge stereotypes, break down barriers, and create a more inclusive narrative that celebrates the diversity and strength of the Latina community.
Deyanira, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
For those who may not have read about me before, my name is Deyanira Martinez, and I wear many hats. I’m a journalist, speaker, 8X bestseller author, communication strategist, and the founder of DeyaMedia Corp. I’m also the co-founder of Mujeres Que se Atreven y Superan Límites, a project very close to my heart.
My journey into this industry has been a blend of passion, purpose, and persistence. I spent 23 incredible years at The New York Times as an administrative manager in Circulation and Advertising. While there, I had the privilege of co-chairing their Latino Employee Resource Group (ERG) for several years. This experience was a turning point for me, igniting a mission to highlight the richness of our culture and the significant contributions of Latinos to this country.
My work extends beyond traditional journalism. At DeyaMedia Corp, we offer a variety of services, including editorial support for authors, event planning, workshops, content creation, and book launch services. We strive to be a comprehensive resource for creatives and professionals looking to make their mark. What sets us apart is our commitment to nurturing and showcasing diverse voices, particularly those from the Latino community.
I’ve also been deeply involved in the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ), serving as Vice President of the New York chapter. This role allowed me to advocate for professional visibility for Latinos and emphasize the importance of diversity and inclusion in the media. My media experience is broad, from producing a TV show to writing for various newspapers and magazines.
One of the achievements I’m most proud of is the Mujeres Que se Atreven y Superan Límites series. This project is not just about telling stories; it’s about creating a movement that empowers Latinas worldwide. By sharing the journeys of these incredible women, we aim to inspire others to pursue their dreams and break barriers.
In everything I do, my goal is to uplift and amplify the voices of our community. I want potential clients, followers, and fans to know my work is rooted in a genuine passion for storytelling and a steadfast commitment to diversity and inclusion. Whether through DeyaMedia Corp or my various media projects, I am dedicated to making a meaningful impact and celebrating the vibrant tapestry of our culture.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
I met my business partner in a somewhat serendipitous way just before the pandemic hit. We were both part of a virtual book club and in late 2019, we decided to take on a bold challenge: to read 52 books in 2020, essentially one book a week. Little did we know that this challenge would change our lives in ways we couldn’t have imagined.
2020 was filled with uncertainty and unprecedented change, but our commitment to reading gave us a constant source of inspiration and motivation. Each book we read, especially those focused on business and personal development, sparked new ideas and fueled our creativity.
Our shared passion for learning and self-improvement through reading became the foundation of our partnership. The insights we gained from those 52 books helped us realize our potential to create something meaningful. In these moments of deep discussion and mutual encouragement, the idea for the book series was born.
The journey of reading together brought us closer as business partners and helped us evolve individually. We became more creative, a bit crazy at times, and incredibly motivated to make a difference. That year of reading was the key to unlocking our potential and setting the stage for everything we’ve accomplished since.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
My journey of moving to the USA at 20 is one story that genuinely illustrates my resilience. I arrived with no money, family, or clear path ahead of me. I didn’t even know how I was going to support myself. Despite these daunting circumstances, I am proud to say that I put myself through college, have worked in some incredible places, and have met amazing people. Now, I dream of working independently and being my boss.
When I first arrived, I faced numerous challenges. I was a single mother, and it took me forever to complete my college education. The lack of family support was incredibly tough, but I never quit. There were countless times when the obstacles seemed impossible, but I kept pushing forward, determined to achieve my goals.
Balancing work, school, and motherhood was no easy feat. I often worked multiple jobs to make ends meet, studying late into the night and trying to be there for my child. It was a demanding and exhausting period, but it taught me the value of perseverance and hard work.
There were moments of doubt and exhaustion, but I reminded myself of why I started and what I wanted to achieve. When you have no backup plan, moving ahead is the only plan; you cannot afford to stop or have second thoughts.
Was it hard? Absolutely. But every challenge I overcame made me more resilient and determined to succeed. As I reflect on my journey, I am filled with a deep sense of pride. I have built a career that I love, and I can inspire and support others through my work
