Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dexter Walker. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Dexter, appreciate you joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
I remember being booked for a role in a national commercial out in Austin, Tx. My vehicle at the time was all over the place. My tags were expired, my driver headlights were busted, and two of my tires were bad because of the threads. I was determined to make the 3.5 hour drive from Houston. I didn’t know how the drive was going to be for me, but in my mind I knew that getting there is what mattered to me the most.

Dexter, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m from Houston, Tx. Growing up…my childhood wasn’t as greener on the other side. I was raised as a foster child for about 13 years or ago. Being in the system sort of made me question myself on surviving. I would get relocated to another home if the placement wasn’t safe enough for me and that was tough on me as well. I would have to adapt to a new environment every 6 months or so which was kind of a bummer. I wasn’t able to explore what I wanted in life because of the way the system treated me. Seeing others my age in the system fail so badly without any guidance…motivated me to want more out of life. I pushed , I pushed, and I pushed and continue to push for better things in life.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a dope artist/creative, is becoming a logical thinker in everything you do. It’s the tunnel vision of what you can gather and coming up with a solution to make your audience go awe.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
There was a moment in time where I sort of tend to my job more than sticking to my craft. I thought money was the answer for everything, but in reality I had to regroup and remind myself that my value was worth much more. So I stop doing extra hours and picking up multiple shifts. I utilized my off days to contribute something new to my acting career.
