We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dexter Nunnery a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Dexter, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
ROUND4 was created in the middle of the pandemic when everything was online and I decided to create a in-person hip hop show not knowing if we would ever go back to live shows again.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a visual creative and entrepreneur from the small town of McComb, Mississippi. I attended Jackson State University for a couple years then decided to move to California to explore my creative thoughts and visions. I’ve always had a love for hip hop since the days of Big Daddy Kane and LL Cool J to name a couple. In early 2019 I started having thoughts of the origionality of hip hop was dying and I wanted to do something about it. As men, we are wired to want to fix issues or problems and the state of hip hop in 2019 was an issue for me personally.
ROUND4 is a pre-fight hip hop entertainment platform that features groups/individual artists who brings a dynamic fusion of two worlds—hip hop and boxing—to life. What sets ROUND4 apart from other hip hop shows is the unspoken competitive nature of performing inside the boxing ring plus the built up anticipation of a boxing arena.
The thing that I’m most proud of about ROUND4 is it’s uniqueness of the entire show. We have ring announcer, ringside commentator, ring card girl and the the rhythmic tapestry of the DJ makes it all work.
ROUND4 not only presents the raw talent of emerging artists but also intertwines their stories with the intensity of a boxing match, creating a unique viewing experience.
As the creator and driving force behind ROUND4 my goal is to break new ground in the entertainment landscape, giving a voice to the unheard while paying homage to the essence of hip-hop, the battle.
Through this innovative blend of hip hop and boxing, I want to invite viewers to witness the relentless pursuit of success, where every round is a chance to witness greatness, and every rhyme is a punch that resonates far beyond the ring.”
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
ROUND4 was built for pre-fight entertainment in Las Vegas. I won’t stop until ROUND4 is among the top events for sports and hip hop fans to attend while visiting Las Vegas for boxing matches.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Being in the hip hop space, I know emerging artists don’t get paid to do shows. From the beginning I wanted to make sure I pay artists something for the their talents. My ROUND4 platform is the only hip hop platform that pays all artists. Sometimes it’s a struggle to keep that committment but I always find a way to honor my word.
