We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dexter Morton. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dexter below.
Dexter , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I would say roughly around 25 or so. I started to see how it made people feel after I created something. My love for my craft grew from there and I started to take it more serious.
Dexter , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Dex I would like to call myself a multidisciplinary artist. My work is heavily inspired by black culture and my childhood nostalgia. Born in Alabama and raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee. I began drawing at age 6 just by watching cartoons and learning from my uncle on creating things from scratch. I later taught himself how to create art digitally as I got older, combining digital prints and paint to create unique pieces. I’m most proud of seeing myself working harder towards my goal to become better at my craft and the fact I can show others different ways of expressing art in many different ways or styles. I want people to know that I create commissioned pieces, designing clothing on my site, and instructing others in self expression through art. I help host paint and sip classes and share tips online through different art groups. I love what I do and I aim to continue to create and improve daily. My family is my inspiration so they help with my brand and some even have a hand or two with my company. I have my work on my website DexArtLab.com or if you want to see some videos or me working on my craft instagram @dex.art.lab.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
One of the ways I did this was meeting people, knowing folks I grew up with and just being an overall nerd to the arts and crafts. The art community is a place where anyone can fit in. All you have to do is be yourself and create what you want. Seeing people in their element, going to art shows, concerts and just being able to relate with others on different levels. Sharing my knowledge through books, life and etc. Honestly
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
So the most rewarding aspect is being able to share the love I have for art and show people my vision on how I see things. It’s dope! Seeing people faces light up when they get their own piece from me and just asking what was behind the process. Just being able to share my passion for art.
