We recently connected with Dexter II & Cami Burnom and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Dexter II & Cami, thanks for joining us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
We came up with our name in kind of an ironic way. Did you know that when dogs chase their tails it’s a sign that they’re bored? Well, that’s what our name, logo and concept are essentially based on. A bored dog chasing its tail. One night, a few months into the pandemic, we were in our living room, watching movies and passing the time. Our dog, Gus, started chasing his own tail, out of nowhere, right in front of us. There wasn’t anything strange about that, obviously, but he caught our attention. He made us curious. Why do they do it? We looked it up online and we got our answer. A bit later. Maybe a few weeks after that is when we really got inspired to go into this business together. We started brainstorming potential names, hoping to land on something relatable, fun and simple. We recalled that moment we had with Gus somewhere early in that process and it kind of all just came together right there. BORED was fun, it was different and it was meaningful. We thought it was the perfect concept for us and what we were trying to do.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I would say that creating art is something that we probably both have been doing for most of our lives so getting into the business of it almost came naturally. Even as a kid, I was selling drawings of cartoons in my dad’s shop for a dollar a sketch. So I truly believe that this type of work was always coming for me. BORED is an art and design brand. We create original digital art pieces and then design and print that art on our merchandise. We sell our prints on hoodies, sweatshirts, tees, joggers, socks, hats, backpacks, blankets etc. We also offer custom services and merchandise for group events such as family reunions, parties, corporate and school functions. What we offer our clients is unique and personal every time and that’s something that really separates us from most companies. We are most proud of the work we have created together. One of our biggest goals is to simply create more art. Creating art is such a rewarding and enlightening process. It can teach you a lot about yourself and who you are if you let it.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For us, the most rewarding aspect of being artists is that we are able to create things together and express ourselves through our work. Creating something real and meaningful from nothing is an incredible and eye opening experience every time and being able to share that work is a privilege.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
One of our biggest goals here is to simply create more art and to inspire others to do so, as well. Art inspires us. It challenges what we think and what we are comfortable with. Ultimately, we hope to get people thinking, dreaming, creating and talking.
