We recently connected with DeWayne Wright and have shared our conversation below.
DeWayne , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
My story starts from a place I like to call Tennessee. To be specific I’m talking about South Memphis, Tennessee. This area is one of the most poverty affected areas in Memphis at the time, from when I was a young man, and certainly still as I am a man today. I remember one of the things I noticed most about these south Memphis homes, and that they had sheets that were on the windows that we in the neighborhood used for curtains or blinds. Don’t get me wrong sheets added character to the homes in my opinion! Lol. One person in the neighborhood actually had Superman sheets which looked really nice from a distance. My home we really didn’t get into the sheets because my grandma worked at a local clothing store JCPENNEY. She managed the textile department in which are blinds, curtains, shades, etc. She had the house designed with curtains and blinds it all looked nice until one day a curtains fell. So I went and brought her a nice looking sheet to put up, as i was on my way back, she had her screwdriver putting the curtain back up. I said, “Grandma, What are you doing?” She told me she was putting the curtain back into place. She told me that sheets are used when you don’t know how to fix the problem! She said come here! Let me show you how to fix the problem!!!! My interest started there! My business is Wizz Creative Creations LLC. This is a handyman business that focuses on finding solutions to problems without putting a sheet over it and calling it a day. I work with not just mounting blinds, but curtains, TVs, any type of home furnishings, etc. Furniture assembly and closets are one of my biggest categories that people can choose from, but to sum it up I am DeWayne Wright and I’m the owner of Wizz Creative Creations the professional handyman.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
From a young age I was always handy. My grandma started my interest off with fixing the curtains, but from there I wanted to learn more. I would open a lot of different things up around the house to see how it worked. Of course, me not “knowing nothing about nothing”-Grandma words, I broke a lot of different items that the list may be too long to name lol. Eventually, I would stop breaking things and actually fix them. My parents were all about saving money. They bought a lot of items that had to be put together, and guess who had to put the things together? Of course me. I put my own bunk bed together at the age of 10. Fast Forward to one of my past jobs. I worked for IKEA, I’ve put together so much furniture of there’s I could probably build a set from scratch. My customers know how familiar I am with the products of today because of course I was growing up in the time they were producing all this “do it yourself furniture.” People are afraid to make purchases in stores where you have to do it yourself! Procrastination is not your friend when you get 6 boxes of your item and you’re looking at the instructions trying to figure out which way is up. Even people right now probably reading this and saying I have them same boxes in the garage right now that’s been in there for at least four years lol. Look go over to Wizzcreativecreations.com go book an appointment and get that piece of furniture put together today. Don’t worry no more I got you covered…
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The world of social media is a cruel world, and if you’re not strong enough to take the punches you need to get strong. Social media can kill a business quicker than it can build a business. For instance, reviews the positive and negatives. People are entitled to write what they want when it comes to a review about your work. In detail a lot of customer’s just want to be heard by everyone, and will stretch the true or just write anything to stand out on a business review page. My backstory comes from a place where I received my first one star review. No words written just a simple one star review. I have over 500 five star reviews, but that one star really bothers me, because I know I put all my efforts into my craft. No short cuts! This person was upset, because they ordered the wrong part, and the part could not be used. It’s not my fault that they ordered the wrong part. I had to understand to stop taking things like this personal. You cannot impress everybody! Some people don’t want to be impressed. Some ppl just want to be heard. In that case one star person I heard you…..😂
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
Technically, this was definitely my side hustle! I could not make the money I am making now to support my family(wife and two kids) once I started. I can definitely tell you how a side hustle becomes your main hustle. If the Main hustle is bringing in almost 2x or 3x more money monthly than your main hustle, then you have some changes to make. Who continues to work somewhere making less when they can be out in the world making more? I’ve worked a job and continued to call off so much to make more money that it affected my work performance. I knew that working for someone was coming to an end I just didn’t know how to make that leap. The way to make the jump is by talking to your customers which it’s called marketing yourself to people that know you most-The return customers! Tell them your expanding! Your opening up more areas of opportunity to work. The people that love your work will get your name out there! My customers love me, and I love them back because if it wasn’t for them I would still be at my old job trying to figure out my next move.
I want to leave on this note!! People never stop believing in yourself. If someone say it’s going to be hard for you to do something guess what life is hard! If everything was so easy everyone would be doing it. Never talk yourself out of trying to better yourself!! Opportunity is just a step away. Lastly, remember family and time is more important than anything in the world….. Thank you!
