Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dewayne Hill Sr. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Dewayne thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
As a master barber with over three decades of experience, I’ve spent a lifetime learning the textures, challenges, and beauty of multicultural hair. Through my work at Marion’s Barber and Hairstyling Center, I’ve had the privilege of serving clients from all walks of life. Over the years, I noticed a recurring challenge: there weren’t enough high-quality haircare products that truly addressed the unique needs of multicultural hair—especially ones created by people who live and breathe this industry every day. That’s when the spark was lit.
The idea to start my own hair care brand wasn’t something that happened overnight. It came from years of listening to my clients, understanding their struggles, and knowing I could help. I wanted to create something honest, effective, and rooted in real experience. But I also wanted it to feel personal—something that reflected who I am, where I come from, and the values my family and I hold close.
When it came time to name the brand, my wife (Deshuwne), our three children (Dewayne Jr. Daven and Devyn), and I sat down together to brainstorm. We tossed around names, trying to find the one that captured the heart and purpose behind the products. It was my wife and daughter, Devyn, who brought the idea home. She said, “What about DK Products?” When we asked what it stood for, she smiled and said, “Devyn Khamela”—her own first and middle name.
At that moment, everything clicked. DK Products wasn’t just a brand—it was a legacy. A name born from love, family, and purpose. It symbolized everything we stood for: authenticity, community, and care.
From that day forward, DK Products became more than just haircare. It became a mission—a family-led commitment to provide quality, multicultural products that celebrate every texture, every curl, and every crown.

Dewayne , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
In the heart of Summerville, South Carolina, where tradition and community run deep, I was more than a master barber— I was a trusted voice in grooming and personal care for over 35 years. As co-owner of Marion’s Barber and Hairstyling Center, I built my reputation one clean cut at a time. But my vision didn’t stop at the barber’s chair.
In June 2023, I launched DK Products, a premium line of multicultural hair and skincare solutions. Rooted in my decades of hands-on experience, DK Products was born out of a desire to offer high-quality, natural care for all hair types and skin tones. My motto is simple: “Healthy hair and skin start with understanding the culture—and respecting it.”
At the core of DK Products are three standout offerings:
1. Sandalwood & Shea Beard Oil
Crafted with rich sandalwood essence and African shea oil, this beard oil not only softens and nourishes facial hair, it also soothes the skin underneath—reducing itchiness and dryness. It promotes a natural shine and tames even the most stubborn beards, making it a daily grooming essential for men who care about presence and polish.
2. African Shea Body Butter
This deeply moisturizing body butter is a luxurious blend of pure African shea and natural oils. It locks in moisture, restores dry skin, and leaves behind a smooth, velvety finish. Perfect for all skin types, it’s a daily defense against environmental stress and aging—offering comfort and confidence in every jar.
3. Hair Conditioning Treatment for All Genders
Formulated for inclusivity, this conditioning treatment hydrates, strengthens, and rejuvenates all hair textures. Whether your hair is curly, straight, coiled, or color-treated, DK’s conditioner detangles, softens, and restores elasticity without harsh chemicals. It’s a salon-level treatment made to be used at home, with results that speak for themselves.
DK Products reflects my commitment to cultural excellence, community care, and generational knowledge. Every product is tested, trusted, and tailored to help people look and feel their best. And as I continue to grow my brand, my mission remains the same: empower through grooming, elevate through quality.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
When I launched DK Products in 2023, I wasn’t just starting a hair care line—I was bringing 35 years of hands-on barbering expertise to the shelf. As the co-owner of Marion’s Barber and Hairstyling Center in Summerville, South Carolina, I had spent decades listening to my clients’ needs, especially those with multicultural hair textures. I saw the gaps in the market—products that either didn’t deliver or didn’t respect the uniqueness of Black hair—and decided it was time to fill them.
What truly built DK Products’ reputation wasn’t just quality ingredients or sleek packaging—it was trust. I was using real feedback from real customers. My signature beard oil treatment became an overnight favorite, praised for its nourishing effect and clean, natural scent. The facial cream, designed for all genders, earned rave reviews for helping restore smoothness and confidence without irritation.
Word spread quickly through the community. Barbers, stylists, and longtime clients began recommending DK Products not just because of my name, but because they saw the results. The Palmetto State Barbers Association Charleston Chapter helped further amplify my brand, supporting my mission to provide authentic care for multicultural hair. Local markets, events, and trade shows soon welcomed DK Products as a standout vendor, earning praise for staying rooted in professional expertise and customer loyalty.
What set DK apart was its origin story—born from the chair, tested in the shop, and proven by the people. Today, DK Products is more than just a brand; it’s a legacy of craftsmanship, culture, and community.

Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?
After over 35 years behind the barber chair, mastering my craft and building personal connections, I decided it was time to expand my reach beyond the walls of Marion’s Barber and Hairstyling Center. In 2023, I launched DK Products, a brand dedicated to multicultural hair care—offering beard oils, facial creams, and more.
But I didn’t stop there.
To serve customers outside of Summerville, South Carolina, I took a bold step into the e-commerce world. Now, my products are available online, making it easier than ever for people across the country to experience what DK Products is all about.
The Pros of Selling Online:
Wider Reach: I can now connect with customers from California to New York—no travel needed.
24/7 Sales: Unlike a physical store, my online shop never closes. Customers can order anytime.
Customer Insights: I gain data on what’s selling, who’s buying, and what they’re looking for.
Marketing Power: Online platforms allow me to run promotions, collect reviews, and grow my brand through social media and email.
But there are Cons Too:
Shipping Challenges: Getting products to customers quickly and safely can be tough.
Competition: The internet is crowded. Standing out takes effort and creativity.
Customer Service: Without face-to-face interaction, it’s harder to build trust and resolve issues.
Platform Fees: E-commerce platforms charge fees that can cut into profits.
Still, the rewards outweigh the challenges. Selling online has allowed DK Products to grow beyond the local community, while still staying true to its roots in quality, care, and culture.
