Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Devyn Richmond. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Devyn thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
“The goal is not to battle the skin, but to support it.”
The United States FDA’s list of prohibited ingredients for cosmetic formulation contains 11 ingredients. In South Korea, the list of ingredients prohibited for cosmetic formulation is 1,040 (as of 2022). With Eastern skincare approaches, we are so used to using outdated skincare ingredients that work against the skin and fight it rather than working with it. My mission is to bring quality, innovative skincare featuring the newest technology and delivery systems that improve the health of the skin + work in symphony with the skin’s barrier and microbiome. That is professional Korean skincare. This is why SKYN Korean Skincare Clinic was born!
Devyn, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Devyn Richmond, I’m a 26 year-old entrepreneur and business owner of SKYN Korean Skincare Clinic in Lexington, Kentucky!
When I went to school for my aesthetics license, I knew my passion was the skin and its health. After graduating, I quickly learned that the skincare industry in the United States has so much room for improvement. With other regions, such as South Korea, far surpassing us as our FDA remains behind in cosmetic ingredient approval, prohibition and innovation. This is why I decided to go out on my own and start my own clinic rooted in Korean skincare approaches + philosophies! All my products in-clinic + professional facial treatments offered are imported from South Korea and are formulated by Korean dermatologists and aestheticians, providing the newest and most effective skincare that works with the skin and not against it. Most of my clients come to me with irritated, tired, stressed and damaged skin, not knowing what went wrong. For me — my passion truly comes from helping and teaching others how to care for the largest, outermost organ that was designed to protect us. Helping others love and care for their skin is what I love!
How did you build your audience on social media?
I started my business with 0 clientele and social followers. The BEST two things I ever did were: 1. imagine your ideal client and market to them, not everyone. Join local Facebook groups, network, and show up everyday. 2. (this one is super specific) show yourself to your social media followers and talk to them! Naturally, it feels so strange and uncomfortable to show your face/talk to your audience on socials but that’s what everyone wants to see! Vulnerable, genuine content and individuals — that’s what others relate to and what will attract the right audience.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
My niche! No one is great at everything, but you can be AMAZING by doing what you really love to do. As an aesthetician, I’m trained in body hair removal and lashes/brows… but I personally dread doing those services. So why would I offer them? I love skincare! And even more so — I’m passionate about providing the absolute best products and services to my clients. This means providing the best version of myself… and you’ll find the best version of yourself by doing what you truly love to do and not comparing yourself. My clients tell me I make them feel like the best versions of themselves and THAT’S what builds reputation and referrals. Make every person who walks into your business feel like the only person in the world while they’re in your care.
