We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Devyn Beeton a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Devyn, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
I always knew that I wanted a profession in helping people and that involved teaching. I decided on nursing and received my Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Thompson Rivers University in 2016. After graduating, I worked in Surgical Daycare where I prepared patients for surgery and then provided discharge instructions to patients who were going home on the same day. In 2017, I continued my education and trained as an Operating Room nurse.
Despite succeeding professionally in a career I enjoyed, I was personally experiencing difficulties with my menstrual health and finding a birth control method that was both effective and fit my intentions of avoiding pregnancy. In 2018, it was completely by accident that my boyfriend (now husband) listened to a podcast interviewing Lisa Hendrickson-Jack that introduced him to the concept of Fertility Awareness Methods (FAM). He shared this information with me, and it honestly changed my life! While diving into the research about FAM, I began taking steps to taking back control of my reproductive and menstrual health without the use of hormonal contraceptives. For me, and my partner, this was the right decision. I first learned by myself and then signed up for a course to master the Justisse Method taught by Lisa Hendrickson-Jack, the Holistic Reproductive Health Practitioner (HRHP) and Certified Fertility Awareness Educator from the very same podcast that introduced me to this world of knowledge. When I started this training, I knew that in my future I too would pursue this education with Justisse College International.
So while I continue to be a Registered Nurse, I have also graduated from Justisse College International in July 2024 as an HRHP and certified Fertility Awareness Educator!

Devyn, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am Devyn Beeton (she/her) and I am a Registered Nurse and Holistic Reproductive Health Practitioner (HRHP) and Certified Fertility Awareness Educator having trained at Justisse College International. I am the founder of Peak Fertility where I teach the Justisse Method of menstrual cycle charting.
I offer one-on-one instruction for women who are trying to conceive, or avoid pregnancy without hormonal contraceptives, or those who are managing reproductive health conditions (such as PCOS, Endometriosis, PMS). Fundamentally, I support clients to become body literate by discovering the intricacies of their menstrual cycle. Charting the menstrual cycle includes observing for cervical mucus to identify times of fertility and tracking basal body temperature to retroactively confirm ovulation. Sounds a little crazy, maybe? But what’s truly crazy is that women and girls aren’t commonly taught this information! What I have heard from each client is “why didn’t I know this sooner?” That was my question when I first discovered fertility awareness, too.

Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
To succeed in this field, I believe it is most helpful to listen and validate each woman’s experience. Every woman’s journey is unique, and the weight of that journey can be heavy.
Beyond this, success is the empowerment of women, one woman at a time.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the lessons I am continuing to unlearn is related to the value of my knowledge, education, experience, and training.
Working as a Registered Nurse in Canada, which offers universal health-care (largely non-privatized) I have not had to think of my monetary value in a patient-to-patient perspective. I am paid by my employer as per my union agreement and that is that.
However, becoming an entrepreneur is a shift in this perspective. Not only do I need to put a value to my services, I also need to advertise them to book clients. This is the opposite of my previous experience where I would show up to work and the patients would be accessing services that I was already employed to provide.
Ultimately, I am unlearning the belief that my time, effort and experience aren’t worth the price.
But I sure would love to see my services and those similar covered by extended benefits one day… That would be a huge win for the FAM world!
