We were lucky to catch up with Devra Jacobs recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Devra thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
The whole concept of writing this book was seeing a need to create a functional program that would provide a way for people to make a less stressful move.
Moving. On an average, people relocate every eight years. It’s a major life change that we saw a way to alleviate the hardships that has been rated one of the top 10 stressors in life. It doesn’t matter if it’s across town or across the country, the notion of moving creates a mixed emotional mindset. Anticipated because it’s introducing a new avenue of life, but simultaneously, the required details of a move can generate an overwhelming sense of dread. A move can be frustrating and, sometimes, even disastrous, or a successful accomplishment if given the right skills. The title A Happy Move is exactly what we wanted readers to experience.
I knew from when we originated the idea that with my experience of having done 29 moves in 40 years that this book could make anyone’s relocation to a new home easier. With my co-author we offered the readers a step-by-step processes of what they could do before, during and after the move.
Devra, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Having been a literary agent for the past 14 years representing other authors works, I was approached by a publisher who knew my life story and asked if I would write a book that could assist people in avoiding the potential pitfalls relocating that I had.
My family and have been gypsies for the last 40 years, moving all over the USA and even one move to Korea. Although I has not personally served in the military, several of my moves were from being married to the Army.
Along the way, I learned numerous valuable lessons on everything from how to pack properly to do it yourself moves to how to hire the right movers for cross-country moves. In this book I share the good, the bad, and the ugly of making a move to any new location.
This was a unique concept that I was approached to write.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Knowing my limitations I had to acknowledge that I do not have great writing skills. So I asked my best friend and professional writer Brit Elders to join me on this journey. I supplied my knowledge and she supplied the grammatical creativity.
This was a great reminder that when you have a dream not to be afraid to ask for assistance to make it happen. I had to unlearn my action of self-micromanaging and be willing to hear another idea.
I found it a bit hard to move from the agent role in the background of publishing to stepping out into authorship.
How’d you meet your business partner?
Many years ago I was the owner/editor of a national magazine called Mystic Pop. I was wanting to interview the actress, Shirley MacLaine, for one of my issues cover. For the life of me I could not figure a way to contact her. However by pure chance a very nice woman answered the phone on one of my attempts and made my dream interview a reality. She later became my best friend and co-conspirator in many other dreams and aspirations. She is my co-author on this book A Happy Move.
