Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Devonric Johnson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Devonric thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
Ever wonder what it’s like to leave what everyone else sees as the perfect career? Well…that was me when I left my career as the Regional Fitness Director for Mayweather Boxing and Fitness in Los Angeles and went back into the entertainment industry full time as an actor and model,
Believe me it was a dream job. I got to work in the fitness industry, in which I love, got experience the process of opening up gyms and even got smooch with the likes of Floyd Mayweather and other celebrities. However your soul isn’t content, no paycheck or perk will fill that void.
I took a risk by going back into the entertainment industry full-time because a couple of the reasons why I left was financial and the grind of being in that business. But after a couple of years, I realized I became uninspired, lost and struggled with a lack of self-identity.
When I initially left, I took a sabbatical and traveled to seek my purpose in life. Shortly after, I was contacted to audition for a TV show and landed the role. The lesson learned here is don’t settle. Pursue what sets your soul on fire and don’t stop until you’ve achieved it. Life’s too short for anything.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My friends call me DD. I’m from Dallas, Texas. Born in prison, I grew up never knowing my parents. I lived with relatives and faced severe poverty. At age 10, I left home due to experiencing verbal and physical abuse. I ended up homeless and eventually joined a gang. When I was 13, my football teammate’s family adopted me. I became both an Academic and Athletic All-American. I earned a scholarship to play football at Southern Methodist University (SMU).
Just a NFL teams were scouting me, tragedy struck. A severe brain injury, Post-Concussion Syndrome, ended my football career. I sank into depression, started partying, using drugs, and got involved in nightlife. Fortunately I was scouted for modeling, moved to New York, and began traveling internationally. My parents encouraged my brother and me to share how I was adopted by his family. This experience led me to become a motivational speaker.
Using my success in modeling and speaking, I moved to Los Angeles to pursue Hollywood. I thought I’d found my calling and was excited to start this new journey. Although I had secured roles in movies, TV shows, and commercials, everyday living was unsustainable. I eventually went bankrupt and started working in fitness, a passion of mine.
I achieved success in fitness but was unfulfilled and went back full-time into the entertainment industry. I have realized that you will never be content if you don’t live your life’s purpose. Things might get difficult but I encourage you never let your circumstance dictate your life.
My life’s purpose is inspiring others through my story. I express through art, fitness and travel. My mantra is to encourage to push through adversity, find your passion, and live life to the fullest.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part of being an artist is using my art (acting) to heal my past traumas. I got so use to subduing my emotions to function that I lost touch with some of my emotions. Acting forces me to go through the emotional spectrum and use them as my super weapon, especially sadness.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My mission is to show people especially at risk youth that it doesn’t matter where you come from or have gone through, the world can become anything you want it to be if you focus and keep striving for what you desire in life. Never let your circumstances determine your future. I know its easier said than done but Im living proof that it can happen.
