We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Devon Wegman. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Devon below.
Hi Devon, thanks for joining us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard.
At DGI, we take pride in bringing an organized and professional approach to the messy and complex world of design and construction. We know that our clients are busy professionals, so we make it our job to consolidate complex information into digestible and succinct deliverables.
We do this primarily through 3D renderings during the design phase. This allows our clients to visualize our designs and provide feedback before any construction begins or purchases are made. This helps to eliminate guesswork and ensures that everyone is on the same page.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I founded DGI after spending years in commercial design. Shortly after, my husband, Michael, joined me, and together we’ve grown the company into what it is today. We provide concierge-level interior design and build services, primarily for private residential projects.
We are most proud of our technically focused and highly creative team, as well as our organized and streamlined design and construction process. We implement the latest technology to communicate clearly with clients and stay efficient every step of the way.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
I met my husband, Michael, in college at Northeastern University in Boston. Shortly after we began dating, we moved to Chicago, where I started DGI. Michael had a background in sales and consulting at tech companies, including Autodesk. We had always talked about him quitting his job and working with me, but he was the primary breadwinner and had a promising career path ahead of him, so it always seemed too risky.
It wasn’t until I wanted to get an office space and put together a proper business plan that Michael finally said, “This is really something, and I’m going to come join you now.”
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
As a services-based company, all I needed to start with was a laptop. I didn’t raise any capital, and instead bootstrapped the business by billing my time and reinvesting my profits. Our first major expenses were an office and our first hire. Even today, we’ve grown the company organically without raising any money. This has forced us to think lean and make meaningful investments in the business. We’ve always been fiscally conservative to stay ahead of costs and avoid outside investment.
