We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Devon Thompson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Devon thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
This music career that I have chosen is taking a massive risk for me. As someone who wants stability in finances, yet a fulfilling creative life, the battle of choosing what I wanted to do with my life wasn’t easy. Going through school, having a few retail jobs really told me all I needed to know about myself. I knew that I had to do music somehow, even though I would have to work ten times as hard with absolutely no idea what the outcome would be. Taking risks in general is not easy for many. I feel like all I do is that very thing now. Everyday I chose to be an artist.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I started very young around 10 years old. I was learning to play guitar and sing, and writing music came around 12. I was heavily bullied all throughout school for being a creative. No one ever thought it was cool until I graduated high school. It made me actually not want to do music at all. But I did find some cool people after starting a band at 16. I spent many years in the underground LA punk and rock scene, going to shows and such. All of the stuff I have had to deal with in the past has led me here, where I can be totally brutally honest with myself and to others. My music is authentic, raw, unhinged, and exactly who I am. I really don’t hide much, because I want people to understand that I get them.

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Content creation is something I did not hate for so long. Posting my music and videos on Instagram and Tik Tok was such a hard no for me, that I feel a little late to the game. My own stubbornness has put me behind where I could have been. but I don’t want to think that way, because now I fully and heavily utilize that tool to connect with artists, creatives, etc.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
When I help someone with my music, emotionally or really any way. I have struggled with mental health issues, and so many people do. They go unseen or aren’t taken seriously. My hope is I want to help people feel heard and seen by me. Connection– not feeling so alone. If I can help one person, and give them a reason to be happy, that is the most rewarding.
