Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Devon Noehring. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Devon, appreciate you joining us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
At the time, the biggest risk I’ve taken according to everyone around me – which included parents, friends, professors and family, was to pursue a life path as an entrepreneur instead of finding a job while I was coming out of college.
While in college, I had started my very first company which was in the apparel industry. It wasn’t a huge business, but I chose a nich industry and built a brand from nothing with it. I learned a ton from this venture and since apparel brands are so marketing driven, I had landed quite a bit of side work helping other businesses with their marketing, from websites to social media to a variety of media creation. Upon graduation, I was hooked on being an entrepreneur. While all my friends had found jobs with guaranteed salaries, pensions, 401k’s, health insurance and more, I was set on carving my own path.
I didn’t think of it as a risk at the time, because my mindset was that I’m young and if it doesn’t work, I can always leverage my experiences and the things I learn to get a 9-5 job at any point in my life. For most people, when thinking about it or even simply hearing about the idea of it, it’s scary and a huge risk. Which is where a lot of the pressure I had received during this key turning point in my life had come from. It’s totally understandable, and is unthinkable for most people.
I had lived off of my savings for the first 5 months of being self employed while I was pursuing any leads for marketing work that I could find. Projects would come, but the grind for the next project was never-ending and my big dream of being an entrepreur was looking further away than I had thought. Eventually leading me to a point that I had picked up a serving/bartending position in the evenings just to make ends meet. This was a low point for me that led to a lot of self doubt, but I didn’t give up.
I had been working on launching my second apparel company in the midst of everything else that I had going on, and it just officially went live. Though the money wasn’t where I wanted it to be, I had a raging fire lit beneath me and I was not about to give up quite yet.
After a couple of months of running my clothing brands and doing marketing for other businesses during the day, and asking people what they wanted for sides with their meal at night, I finally landed my first major marketing client. At the time, this client was huge for me. It was a monthly retainer for media production, so filming and editing videos for them to utilize on their social media channels. The amount was less than $2,000/mo but at the time, it was enough to cover my bills and continue to grow the business.
This was over 5 years ago now, and shaped my life into something that I had always dreamed of. If I can say one thing to anyone that dreams of being an entrepreneur, but is afraid of the huge risk involved, just do it. Life is too short to spend time thinking about the things you wish you had done and do whatever it takes to make it happen.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m an entrepreneur with a focus in marketing. I own a full suite marketing agency called REV Branding Industries where we specialize in managing business’s digital marketing and provide marketing integration services where our team manages areas of business’s marketing that they can’t manage on their own. We also have a major focus on branding with everything that we do, assuring their appearance and messaging all aligns with who they are as an organization.
To say it simply, I’m a passion driven entrepreneur and I find myself pursuing businesses in industries that I enjoy. So in addition to the marketing agency, I also founded an apparel brand called River Brothers Outfitters based on my passion for hunting and the outdoors.
It’s hard to explain how I got here today without it sounding easy, because it definitely wasn’t easy. After graduating college, I chased my dream of being an entrepreneur and marketing was not only what I went to college for, but it also came to me naturally. I was obsessed with the concept of branding and why consumers connect with companies so strongly. I tested my theories and built my own brand from the ground up within the apparel industry. Marketing work came through word of mouth and networking, with people always intrigued by what I was doing for not only my businesses, but others that I worked with.
The services I’ve provided to clients over the years have drastically changed since the start, but today we specialize in implementing unique digital marketing strategies for businesses and managing the key areas involved. This includes designing, building and managing websites, social media, digital advertising, SEO, graphic design, branding and media production.
Owning my own businesses outside of the marketing agency helps us help our clients even more based on our understanding of how businesses work and has played a critical role our ability to help our clients based on what they need, and not just what we want to sell them. Most companies today are sold only what the agency offers, not what the company needs and we aim to change that.
The two biggest problems that we solve for our marketing clients are helping them turn outdated and lacking digital marketing efforts into industry leading digital marketing, along with eliminating the inconsistent messaging and branding that comes with working with different agencies in all different areas of their marketing. We bring the clients’ goals and our ideas full circle, to help them build their brand and grow their business!
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Working hard for our clients, always being responsive, transparency and being a good human.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
There’s always going to be ups and downs in life, no matter what you do for work. Often times, these ups and downs feel drastically bigger and at times feel like the come drastically faster when you’re an entrepreneur.
The one thing I’ve worked on over the years is giving myself credit for the small victories along the way, because when you have huge goals to achieve it is very easy to look past the small wins, often times leading to you feeling like you’re not making the progress that you want to see or that you feel like you deserve.
The other side of this is realizing that the downs you’re feeling are normally caused by obstacles and all obstacles can be maneuvered through, typically leading to another small victory. Don’t let a problem or down moment slow you down, find the solution and keep moving on!
The one book that has acted as a good reminder for me in shaping this mindset is called Greenlights by Matthew McConaughey. This isn’t a business book at all, but rather an entertaining way of transforming your seemingly redlights into greenlights
