We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Devon McLeod. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Devon below.
Devon, appreciate you joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
One of the risks I took when I started my practice was leaving my salaried job at an established practice. Despite not having any clients when I left, I knew that it was time to move on and build my own practice from the ground up.
During those early days, I got a part-time job as a receptionist at a spa in New York City to support myself. I also taught 10 fitness classes a week. By following my intuition, I landed exactly where I was meant to be. Sometimes, my ego would come in with, “You should be further along by now.” But, I learned how to trust the process of life. At the spa, I learned invaluable business lessons about customer service. I even held workshops and attracted clients at the fitness studio where I was teaching. I was right where I was supposed to be. My practice wouldn’t be what it is today without those experiences and life lessons.
Devon, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I became a therapist when I realized the psychology books I was reading in my early 20s weren’t just a hobby. I knew after some soul-searching that after completing Teach for America I wanted to go to graduate school. After working at an outpatient clinic and another practice in New York City, I set out on my own.
In my practice, I focus on helping sensitive people use their sensitivities as a strength, both personally and professionally. I tend to work with people who pick up on others’ energies and who feel like emotional sponges. While living life as an empath and a sensitive person is a gift, it can be exhausting if you don’t have the right tools!
My specialty is helping sensitive people thrive. I find that most sensitive people know what they need, and the challenge is about giving themselves permission to have it. When a sensitive person is filled up, their presence is a gift. The possibilities are endless.
As far as my training, I’m trained in Gestalt Therapy, which is a mind-body approach to therapy. I’ve also completed more than 100 hours of training in flower essences, an all-natural energetic remedy to support clients in releasing fears and emotional blocks. I also incorporate aspects of astrology and breathwork into my practice. I use the best of both worlds – the benefits of therapy with a holistic approach. One of the things I’m most proud of is looking at every client as an individual with limitless potential.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I grew up doubting myself and wanting to be “perfect” at everything I did. I stressed myself out throughout college and as a young adult trying to uphold some impossible standard. I still strive to do my best and what is in my heart, but now I trust the process. I’ve learned that people will gravitate toward you for the type of person you are, not for your lack of mistakes. Every experience teaches you something. What’s beautiful about life and being human is imperfection, growing, and learning from what you try.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Humility is one of the most important qualities for a therapist. When you approach your clients with an open mind and heart, you’re open to creative solutions. Your clients are trusting you. While training and credentials are undeniably helpful, knowing that the person across from you respects you creates a powerful healing field. It’s okay if you don’t have all the answers. In fact, if you think you have all the answers, you might miss out on the subtleties that can help a client. I’ve learned so much from my clients. I try as best I can to keep an open mind and heart.
