We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Devon Carter, Phd a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Devon, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Parents can play a significant role in affecting how our lives and careers turn out – and so we think it’s important to look back and have conversations about what our parents did that affected us positive (or negatively) so that we can learn from the billions of experiences in each generation. What’s something you feel your parents did right that impacted you positively.
My parents gave everything they had to raise me and I am forever grateful for them. Their effort is something I noticed early growing up and is what has propelled me to succeed. I try to embody their drive to be the best parents they can be. I want to make them proud of me because I know they put everything they had into being great parents.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Dr. Devon Carter, is originally from Cleveland, Ohio and attended John Hay (Architecture and Design) High School. As a top 50 shooting guard in the country ranked by ESPN, he, then, received a basketball scholarship at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. As a two-time captain of the basketball team, he ultimately earned both a Bachelors of Arts (‘16) and, continuing his education while on the team, a Masters of Science (‘18) in Social Psychology. After earning his PhD in Special Education (‘22) from Lehigh, he earned a position as Professor and Intervention Specialist at the University of Akron. This genuine urge to help has allowed us to earn the trust of school districts as well as entire communities and universities across the country.

How do you keep your team’s morale high?
Honesty, Loyalty, Effort, Belief, Wisdom, and Appreciation are REAL’s Values and help us keep a high morale among the individuals that support REAL as well as the students, parents, etc. who benefit from REAL’s services.
