We recently connected with Devon Anderson and have shared our conversation below.
Devon, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
Starting a business in itself is a risky move. I always like to tell people that although I have no glass ceiling and my options for growth are endless, I also have no floor. There is little to no security when owning a business; having a strong client base is beyond imperative.
That said, I started my business while living in an idea, and within a couple of months, I moved to Washington; this is where my client base started to flourish. I lived in a small town where small businesses were open-minded to working with a startup (Me). I grew and felt comfortable in this small town. The greatest business risk I have made to date was moving from the small Washington town to San Diego, CA. Although all of my business is done remotely with the exception of the select few in-person monthly meetings, leaving the town could run the risk of my WA client base feeling deserted. For my mental health, I knew I needed to move to a warmer/sunnier climate, and although there was a risk, I knew I had to take a leap of faith. Once I decided it was time to relocate, I moved to SD within 3 weeks and have never regretted the decision.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hello! My name is Devon Anderson, and I am the owner of Sage Organic Marketing LLC.
I BELIEVE THAT EVERY BUSINESS, NO MATTER HOW SMALL OR HOW YOUNG, SHOULD BE GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO GET THEIR PRODUCTS/SERVICES IN FRONT OF THE PERFECT AUDIENCE!
I created my company so small businesses could receive quality services at a rate designed to promote growth! I always knew that I would own a business someday. I graduated from Washington State University double majoring in Marketing and Business Management. Since starting my business in 2021 I have been sharing my passion for social media and digital marketing with clients who are ready to scale their businesses and take their industry by storm!
Here at Sage Organic Marketing, we focus on organic marketing tactics that create stable growth. This is done through mindful content creation, staying relevant and consistent through social media channels, and engaging with the target audience.
It’s time to stop the scroll!
Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
I am in constant contact with clients. I want them to feel heard, their ideas discussed, and their goals to be achieved. This is a lot harder if the communication is not strong. Before signing a contract, I tell clients that communication is key in this industry. I need to be informed if they want to pivot or change the content output. If I do not know a change needs to be made, there will be no change, and then there can become miscommunication. This is why I insist on monthly meetings for my full-service clients.
I strongly believe that individuals will choose you over a competitor if they can relate to you and your values. I take the time to know my clients, and often more times than not, those clients become friends, and we are comfortable enough to have honest conversations that will build growth for both businesses involved.

Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
At the beginning of my business, I was a full-time teacher supporting middle school students catch up on the math skills that may have faltered due to COVID’s effect on the education system. I would work 8-3 Monday through Friday, go home, and start building my business. There were weeks when I would work close to 80 hrs because I was unwilling to let either job give. After a couple of months of multiple work weeks over 65 hrs, I knew I would have to make a decision. Although it was hard to leave the school and the students I had helped with breakthroughs, I knew in my heart the business had to come first. I quit teaching and fully invested my time into building my business, and because of this decision, my business has been profitable from the beginning.
