We recently connected with DeVogue Johnson and have shared our conversation below.
DeVogue, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Modeling allows me to go all out with my creative imagination and abilities. This craft was not easy also has it’s dangers as well. One was a photo shoot. Photographer who was very popular in the community had been vouched by a few models. I knew saying he was safe when I was just in lingerie not nude. Closed my eyes for a moment. That’s when he reached and touched to my face withoutconsent. The studio owner was just on the side of the wall, and my partner at the time was not even 20 or 30 feet outside the studio. Waiting for me in the car. The man had a wife had a family. That experience taught me that I must have my own vetting systems. Because that was very traumatic for me. Took almost a year before. I was comfortable to close my eyes on a photo shoot without fear of someone trying to do that again. Also taught me not to be quiet It wasn’t until years later that I spoke up about my experience. Sadly many people came forward and said that they had similar experiences with that person if possibly i’d spoken up. That predator what have been found in the community faster. It also showed me that many people were okay. With the behavior just so they could have “content” that this person had shown to some blatantly. Was huge a career lesson that I have to have my vetting systems and not just trust people’s word unless I knew them and their character. That my boundaries are not to be tested that it’s okay to have my boundaries! That I am not too much for not being like other people. That it’s OK completely, okay! Focus on making art with like minded people who appreciate my voice and what, I bring to the table and let go of making “content” make “art” instead.
DeVogue, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I got into modeling by chance. Posing posing for my partner at the time during a make-up class. The instructor looked at me and told me. I had a good face for modeling. I had done some body art modeling and creature modeling for performance/ scare events. Never the beauty and fashionside. So I took my phone camera and decided to take photos of myself and start a model mayhem account. I saw this as a chance to learn about my body and how to pose and another reason the photos I was seeing they were all nude. And I wasn’t ready to show my body to someone I didn’t know yet who I didn’t know would appreciate what I did so I took my own photos and started my portfolio myself. I was blessed to have quite a few wonderful people reach out to me who actually wanted to work with me as a professional after that. Yes, also shady and new model chasers lol as the name implies they target new models they know they can get away with things that veterans would never allow. I do acting and modeling my modeling ranges to multiple genres. Underwater, fashion, lingerie, artistic nudes, figure art and much more. Something I am proud of with my business is that my clients are always happy and proud of the art that we make, and that my platform is also one to uplift and educate about problems in the world. The services that I offer range greatly. I offer model coaching, chaperone/ assistant to photographers, professional model. dancer, and live performer.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
February 2023 I lost my job without 2 weeks notice or anything they decided to downsize. I had been working hard for them for almost 4 years, Mar Mel Inn was its name. I was scared didn’t know how’s I gonna pay my rent. I had only been doing modeling as part-time. That was the kick that I needed to make modeling. My full-time career and I am loving it. The safety net was completely gone. Now was all on me to pull in that income by pushing my business and working hard.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Have fun with what you are putting up on your pages! If you’re going to focus on anything, make sure that it is good quality but otherwise have fun. These things are going to constantly change because of trends. So trying to keep up with the trends will drive you insane! So focus on making beautiful one of a kind things that make your heart sing. That is how I was able to build my audience. I connected with them by being genuinely. Just me and you will connect with your audience. It’s not gonna be fast sometimes I own that but the journey worth it.
