Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Devlon Short. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Devlon, thanks for joining us today. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
The first client I’ve ever gotten was thru my wife’s high school friend rapper C-Wenz. I had heard his material one day my wife advised me to reach out to him we had a couple of mutual friends from around the way so I took a chance. My first ever music video with him was for free and it was about his friend that had passed at the time so we did a tribute video for him..shot all around LA to the beach. Once he got the first cut back we immediately began working on his second video that’s when I got my first payment shooting anything ever…$250!! When I got that first payment I realize my wife and I can actually do this as a business.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Our art form is Filmmakers. We create engaging videos that will attract the desired audience our clients want. I believe what really sets us apart is that we help who we work with from pre-production/planning the project to how we’re going to market it afterward. Getting to this way of doing things was not an easy task first starting off, it was a lot of trial and error. Most times I questioned myself and wanted to stop going after this career choice but I never gave up! just kept learning and growing! trying new things, seeing what works and what doesn’t. Always saying how can I get the desired result. I highly courage everyone who ever going the route of artist and creative is always keep learning and never give up! And remember what you put out to the world as your art is a representation of yourself! Make it a good one!
We’d love to hear about you met your business partner.
My co-founder/business partner is my wife (Cheyanne) who I met thru a mutual friend. She’s a musician herself and at the time I was solely focused on becoming an actor..we hit it off having a mutual liking of the arts..as years went on I turned more into filmmaking and creating short films it never crossed my mind to shoot music videos til she brought it up one day telling me the pain points of a musician and how we can better serve them to present themselves in the best way possible
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Best lesson I learned is you can’t shoot everything. Once I understood the power of niching down and providing for one set audience I was able to scale faster and provide the solutions better.
