We recently connected with Devinaire Barnes and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Devinaire thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I was in the first grade when I first officially met—and fell head over heels for—the art of creativity. My Godmother, who doubled as a math teacher and the overseer of the creative arts at my school, asked if I wanted to audition for the lead role in the Black History program. Naturally, I said yes—not because I had some grand artistic revelation, but because I knew it meant getting out of class early for rehearsals. Priorities, right?
At first, I was just excited to dodge math problems, but something shifted. The more I rehearsed, the more I fell in love with memorizing lines, embodying a character, and connecting with my castmates. It wasn’t just about saying words—it was about bringing them to life. Playing George Washington Carver, I was fascinated by his history, unknowingly diving into the art of character development before I even knew what that meant.
Then came my big moment. My Oscar-worthy performance (as I choose to remember it) was met with thunderous applause and a standing ovation—or at least, that’s how it played out in my head. My story, my rules! But in that moment, I knew: I wanted to be an actor.
From then on, I was writing little scripts, recruiting friends and family to play characters I created, and reenacting Disney Channel scenes during commercial breaks like it was my personal audition tape. The fire was sparked early, and there was no turning back—I knew I was meant to be part of the fine arts world.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Devinaire Barnes. I’ve been immersed in the entertainment industry practically my whole life—starting as an actor at just one year old! My passion for storytelling was solidified in first grade when I landed the lead role in my school’s Black History program. What started as a fun way to get out of class turned into a lifelong love for the arts.
I originally only wanted to act, but after receiving higher education that taught us how to do everything behind the camera as well, I discovered a whole new world of creativity. I fell in love with the art of directing, producing, and post-production work, realizing that storytelling isn’t just about being in front of the camera—it’s about the magic that happens behind it, too.
I’m an actor, writer, director, producer, and radio host, dedicated to creating impactful stories that inspire and uplift. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Communication from Texas Southern University, which gave me a strong foundation in storytelling across various media. During my time in college, I was vetted by a professor to get into radio, which is how my radio journey began. From there, I became a radio personality and producer at KTSU 90.9FM, sharpening my ability to engage audiences and bring compelling narratives to life.
I write and direct for both theatre and film, and in 2023, I founded Write the Vision Productions, inspired by the Bible verse Habakkuk 2:2—”Write the vision and make it plain.” I truly believe that when we write down our goals, we can see them more clearly, which motivates us to bring them to life. Through my production company, I help clients develop and execute their creative visions. Whether it’s film, theatre, concerts, production management, tour scheduling, consultations, commercials, videos, producing, or creative direction—Write the Vision Productions is all about making ideas a reality. Because at the end of the day, life itself is a production!
I’m also proud to have written, directed, cast, and produced an award-winning short film, a testament to my dedication to excellence in storytelling. Additionally, I have been fortunate enough to help with some of Houston’s major events and concerts put on by the community station. I take great pride in giving back to the community and using my platform to uplift and inspire others.
One of my core beliefs is that if we see better, we will do better. That’s why I don’t believe in writing stereotypical stories—I create compelling narratives that challenge, inspire, and push audiences toward growth and change. My goal is always to tell stories that make people want to be better, not just entertained for the moment.
What sets me apart is my ability to connect deeply with audiences, whether through film, theatre, concerts, or radio. Seeing the impact my work has on people—whether it’s moving them emotionally or inspiring them to chase their own dreams—is the most rewarding part of what I do.
For those looking to collaborate or follow my journey, know that I’m all about bringing creativity, passion, and purposeto every project. If you’re looking for fresh, compelling, and meaningful content, I’d love to connect. Let’s create something unforgettable!
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Supporting artists goes beyond just liking posts—it’s about actually making purchases and sharing their work. I believe people often underestimate the power of a share. As I grow in the industry, I’m learning that there truly are six degrees of separation. You never know who someone that follows you may know, and when they see your post, it could open a door or create a connection that leads to something magical. Investing in the arts, paying creatives fairly, and showing up for their work by sharing, buying, or attending is crucial in helping artists thrive and reach wider audiences.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being a creative is seeing my vision come to life. Whether I’m bringing an event together for a client or directing a script I’ve written, the thrill is the same. There have been moments when the final result didn’t just meet my expectations—it exceeded them in ways I never imagined. My creative process is deeply visual; when I write a script, I see specific actors in the roles, envisioning the family dynamic and their on-screen chemistry. Bringing those characters to life, shaping their relationships, and watching it all unfold is an exhilarating experience like no other. There have even been times on set when I’ve been moved to tears by the execution and delivery. It’s moments like those that remind me exactly why I do what I do.
