We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Devin Smalls. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Devin below.
Alright, Devin thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I developed a love for art when I was young watching my older brother paint and my mom and grandma sew. My father was a stylish individual as well so as I grew older I carried those thoughts with me and wanted to implement them into my everyday lifestyle through fashion and art.
Devin , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
When it comes to business I would say the military helped me out a lot with that. Taught me how to strategically move and utilize people around me so that we can show our vision as curators. My number one skill is relationship building. Being able to connect with like minded individuals and tell stories through art. My drive is what sets me apart from a lot of the other artist. Once I think I could do something, I usually get it done because I just feel as though it wouldn’t be a thought of mines if I weren’t able to accomplish it. I’m most proud about my fashion and music event on April 16th, 2022 called the “Gullah Gala”. We will be showcasing artist all around the Charleston, SC community providing other black owned businesses the opportunity to connect with other businesses and new clientele.
: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal as a creative director is to continue to put out art into the universe through fashion and create a safe place for artist to come and be able to work on their craft, whether it’s fashion design workshops, photography, graphics, music, painting, etc. I want to own my own studio and collaborate with artist not only in Charleston, SC but all over the world.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Maximizing the opportunities that the military gave me has helped me with my journey. Being able to travel to different countries on the military’s dime and obtain information about art has given me the outlet and connections needed to progress in this field.
