We were lucky to catch up with Devin Scott recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Devin thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
In hind site, moving towards the production side of music sooner than later is one of my biggest regrets. Since my earliest memories as a kid I always internalized and imagined different soundscapes, styles, and structure of production in general. I began to realize that I had a general sense of understanding sound when artists began contacting me in regards to finding them the right production/sound/genre to properly fit their vision and/or voice for project direction. My apprehension towards production stemmed from not having the confidence of being able to learn the softwares (DAW’s) to produce in general. The thought of having to go to school again to learn another subject terrified me. Instead of trying to learn production, I started writing and creating music as a vocal artist. The passion wasn’t all there from the beginning. Still knowing that music was the one thing I was most passionate about, but not loving the current process was very difficult. Writing songs was no longer as interesting, and began to feel more like a chore. A break was much needed to find the musical spark again. After taking over a year hiatus, the itch to create music came back. My daughter had a small electric piano in her room. I began to mess around with chords and structures. Then realized that there was already an application on my computer that has a piano on it via garage band. After only 30 minutes of experimenting, the music bug was back more than ever. I downloaded Logic Pro and was addicted immediately. Setting aside a couple of hours a day to teach myself the software brought excitement and interest like never before. From that moment on I have been addicted to production and continue learning and evolving every project. Now I have a lot of singles finished, and am working on completing my first debut EP!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
As long as I can remember, music has been a major compassion of mine. I would listen to music while brushing my teeth, going on car rides, walking outside, as background sounds throughout the day etc. As a child, studying artists and producers was always a major interest. Sifting every day through blogs and/or music sites in hopes of finding new artists/sounds to widen my library. Watching artists in their creative space was so inspirational to me. Knowing that individuals were capable of turning their passion into their main source of income was an absolute dream to me.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
The biggest struggle is realizing that it takes a lot of time and sacrifice to put the necessary effort and recourses into properly learning the craft. It is very overwhelming in the beginning when you first realize how much there is to truly learn and get accustomed to. The beginning of learning any passion is typically like this. It brings excitement and enthusiasm into knowing that the process will be interesting and worth while. Once you adjust to it, things come natural just like riding a bike and that’s where the tru fun begins.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
People need to understand the work that goes into becoming a professional artist. Like any other profession it takes dedication, discipline, passion, and a love for the process itself. If you like/support an artist, just listening to their content and reaching out is huge. Artists never know who is listening at any given time when a song is released. Listening, sharing, recommending the music you listen to goes a very long way for the artist that created it.
