We were lucky to catch up with Devin Olguin recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Devin, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with inspirations and heroes. Are there any historical figures you look up to?
A historical figure that I look up to is Tupac Shakur. Tupac Shakur is one of the best hip hop rappers of all time and has been a sense of inspiration to me since I started listening to his music when I was in high school. Growing up I wasn’t raised in a wealthy household and I experienced many hardships because of this. The lyrics in Tupac’s music have kept me motivated and optimistic about my future. Some lessons I took from Tupac are to always keep my head up and be positive even when times are tough, love and respect women, stand true to my beliefs, and to have confidence in my own talents and abilities. Overall, as someone who has lived in the Bronx, NY for the past 7 years, working from the ground up, I have an affinity to hip hop music and the motivational lyrics about working hard to have a better life. Although Tupac is the main example for me, other hip hop artist that motivate me include J Cole, Drake, and Dave East.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Devin Olguin, I’m originally from Utah where I worked as a wildland firefighter before moving to NYC to pursue a career as a fashion designer specializing in intimate apparel, resort, and swimwear. Having immersed myself in the world of fashion at The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), I honed my skills and made the decision to specialize in intimate apparel.
Upon graduating from FIT, I was honored to receive the critic’s award for best design in my class, setting the stage for my passion-driven trajectory in the fashion industry. What distinguishes me is my keen aesthetic eye and unwavering attention to detail. Each piece I create is a meticulously crafted work of art, where considerations of color, texture, and style lines are paramount.
As an original, niche designer based in NYC, my focus extends beyond mere garments. I take pride in my proficiency in bespoke, couture, and celebrity costume design, offering a refreshing alternative to the prevalent landscape dominated by corporate fashion giants and ready-to-wear brands.
What sets me apart is not just my commitment to craftsmanship but the promise that clients will receive a truly exceptional and one-of-a-kind piece, whether it’s exquisite lingerie, resort wear, or swimwear. In a city saturated with mass-produced fashion, I remain dedicated to delivering a personalized and unique experience, ensuring that each creation reflects the artistry and passion that define my brand.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me the most rewarding aspect of being an artist and creative is being able to take part in the fabrication of the reality in which we all live. Just like how an architect creates the buildings that we walk past every day, as a fashion designer it is really rewarding to play a part in today’s fashion. Whether I’m creating a costume for a celebrity performer or designing a new collection to be seen walk the runway by countless attendees and future viewers, this is an amazing feeling and a responsibility that I’m honored to be a part of.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My ongoing goal that drives my creative journey is to be able to spend more time being creative. As an artist it can be hard to fund your creative endeavors. Many artists either stop pursuing their passion or they spend very limited time. What drives me most is working to be able to spend as much time as possible on my design work. The best way for me to achieve this goal is by making my passion my career.
