We were lucky to catch up with Devin O’Bannon recently and have shared our conversation below.
Devin, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Often outsiders look at a successful business and think it became a success overnight. Even media and especially movies love to gloss over nitty, gritty details that went into that middle phase of your business – after you started but before you got to where you are today. In our experience, overnight success is usually the result of years of hard work laying the foundation for success, but unfortunately, it’s exactly this part of the story that most of the media ignores. Can you talk to us about your scaling up story – what are some of the nitty, gritty details folks should know about?
Consistency is one of the ways that I was able to scale up and grow my business from just a dream to a full-time career. In the music industry, it’s also about relationship building as well. So, being able to work well with people and develop strong relationships helps me get through the doors and open up substantial opportunities to be able to scale up and grow. It takes time, but success can be found with dedication and consistency.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Devin O’Bannon, and I am a producer/composer and studio engineer with Black Irish Entertainment. I’ve grown this business to be a one-stop shop for creatives to come and bring their ideas from concept to high-quality world-release-ready songs and projects.
I’ve had the honor to have music I’ve created and produced for my artists placed in film and TV shows and video games that have played worldwide. Which I believe is something that sets me apart from other producers. I’m proud to have solidified a Publishing deal focusing on everything Cinematic, and now I have a consistent workflow of working on music for sync (film/TV/video games). Now, I bring new value to my clients, artists, brand, and my team.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Music has always been a part of my life, but I believe my true journey started in 2014 when I moved to California. My humble beginnings of having a simple recording studio in my apartments led me to learn my craft and gain opportunities to enter and work out of more prominent and developed studios.
In 2016, I moved to Los Angeles, where I worked a 9-5 at the bank and worked in several studios at night. Those long days, nights, and lack of sleep were the primary moments that helped grow my business into what it is today. In 2020, I was able to transition into working in the studio full-time and have developed some incredible relationships, both business and personal, that have helped grow my business into an international brand.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One lesson that I had to unlearn was that process of comparison, especially in the creative industry. I learned the lesson by stepping back and realizing that I was growing and forging my own taste in my craft by not trying to do what others were already doing, but by just trying thing and see what happens.
Now, with growth, mentorship, experiences, and network, I now have developed a taste and sound that fits what I do, bringing unique value to my clients and artists.
