We were lucky to catch up with Devin Kowl recently and have shared our conversation below.
Devin, appreciate you joining us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
One of the biggest risk I have ever taken was moving to LA two week after I turned 18 years old all on my own. I knew I wanted to pursue a career as professional singer/artist. Sow hew I turned 18 my first thought was how d o I get to LA? I has been coming back and fourth for a while as as child actor but knew I needed and wanted to build a life here. So I took the leap and chose not bet on myself and 11 years alter I am a still here!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Faith, Falsettos and Philanthropy — are three things you’ll find in the DNA makeup of Devin Kowl. Devin, a singer, songwriter and performing artist started his musical journey nearly a decade ago as a soloist during his elementary graduation. He credits the “artistic push from Mrs. Lawson,” and the audience standing ovation with dramatically changing his life. Born and raised in Washington, D.C. Kowl grew up listening to the city’s soulful chart-topping R&B artists from the 90’s and early 2000’s. Closely following their paths, he knew he needed to take the steps necessary to make his dream of a career in the music industry a reality.
Devin’s charitable spirit led him to release his first EP at the age of 15. As the vocalist and face behind a worldwide anti-bullying campaign, he went from unknown artist to local celebrity in the blink of an eye — performing at the historic Blues Alley jazz and supper club in D.C. By 18, Devin knew it was time to take his career to new heights. Two weeks after his birthday, he packed his bags and moved to Los Angeles.
Since living in LA, Devin has been balancing his career in entertainment with the day-to-day life of an executive at the family business; Favour Consulting Group — a full service consulting firm for Nonprofits. As a well-rounded fourth generation entrepreneur he has expanded his professional portfolio, and after taking a break to help build the family business, Devin is returning to his lifelong passion, music.
Don’t box him in, just yet, as Devin is proving that his experience goes beyond performing in his hometown and for charity events. To prepare for this moment, he was invited and participated in a four-week acting camp with Pinnacle Actors Group (PAG) in California. PAG was founded by industry veteran Lawrence Fogle — who for more than four decades has produced, directed, and managed several lead actors and models.
Kowl has also been a featured vocalist for many corporate and private events and has appeared as a featured singer in several musical productions. Highlights of those performances include the MTV Emerging Lounge Gift Suite and the Scion’s Got Talent event.
This time around, with a powerful new sound and message, Devin is excited to be writing his own music.. Devin is a one-of-a-kind performer who is distinguished by youthful energy and in- depth lyrics that touch the soul.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I think the most rewarding part about being a singer/songwriter is writing records about your life and sharing my own personal perspective and it resonating with my audience. In a way songwriting for me is like therapy and there is beauty in knowing you can write and share something that so many other people are also can relate to.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Sure, about 8 years ago I stepped away from music out of frustration and took a long hiatus from music. However in that time I started a business with my family that became quite successful, at the time I didn’t really know what I was doing but it was the best decision I ever made. Taking that break and starting the business with my family not only need up opening doors for me in music but also ended changing my perspective on life in a major way. It helped me develop as a creative and gave me a better story to tell & helped me learn so much about myself. Also with taking that break and the business becoming successful, it should showed me that even though I had to pivot there was still something lacking for me which was music. So no matter how much I tried to run from it and change directions it was like music kept finding its way back to me and now I have somehow managed to still run my company and start working on music and putting records again! Even though we have to pivot sometimes the the things that really do bring us joy always find their way back to us.
