We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Devin Hodge a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Devin, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
I would probably not change too much or I wouldn’t be here where I’m at. I could be further ahead or a quick flop like many other musicians. I’m fairly comfortable saying I’m good in the “Now” . But if I had to really choose, I’d go back and start when I was in my early teens on a more serious note.
Devin, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started Dayz of Deception in 2020. I just wanted to have a fun band. Nothing major. Much like any band you go through members, occasionally, guitar players, drummers & stuff like that it’s part of the game. But we stayed humble and kept at it . Beat many odds in the music world. We started off doing 90’s covers and gained massive followings. We later started doing our original work and gained even more headway. We’ve had recordings done by Peter Klett of Candlebox (Founding member), played shows with national artist like Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, multiple collaborations with different artists. We have been called “Nu-Grunge” genre. Something new we’ve not heard of , but we like it. Our current members are :Devin Hodge -Vocals Guitar, Drew Huggins -Bass Tyler Hodge – Guitar, Johnathan Wright – Guitar, Dorian Dalton – Drums. We are most known for our work in the community. We raise funds, toys, clothing, donations every year all year long for many shelters & organizations. Christmas time is huge for us as we raise tons of toys for children .
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
So I guess the most rewarding part for us is being able to you know, share the laughs, the cries, the hugs , smiles, and the happiness of everything that we do being musicians and the communities that we do help. Meeting new people be it fans or other bands etc. That’s probably the most rewarding of it. It’s a good feeling. Helping others by the work we do in the community and awesome shows we play is just magical . Being able to call each of our band members family is also a huge reward. We even consider past members part of our family. We all share the love .
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Our journey is based on having fun and enjoying our time with each other as a brotherhood and family. Our main drive is being able to help the community and help others through what we do in music. Most of the time, we tend to raise our own donations and everything like that.
We try to encourage other artists locally to jump on the philanthropy bandwagon. It is extremely hard to juggle our music time and keep up with the community work, but we do !!! In the music world , it’s too easy to stroke your own ego . We stay away from bands that do this, and honestly, seeing musicians do this drives us to be the complete opposite.
