We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Devin Gatling a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Devin, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you recount a story of an unexpected problem you’ve faced along the way?
Some of the most unexpected problems I’ve faced as a creative on my journey are a few things lol but to narrow it down to the most important for me would probably be miscommunication / expectations.
a bit of backstory about communication / exceptions, for starters would be the act of getting the vision out of whomever i’m working with communicated to me properly in order to execute on the vision. Yeah im skilled at what I do but I’ve had years if practice at it so my process these days are thoughtless & transitioning to working with people, companies or brands is a whole other job itself & a-lot harder and taxing if you don’t have a proper system in place to deal with it to make sense out of whatever the project it is that you’re working on.
On the expectation side certain clients don’t really know or even understand the amount of time, effort, communication and attention to detail that it takes to properly execute on a vision to my standard. I can throw in budgets also but that’s going down another rabbit hole lol
When involved in these situations it really shines a light on you & the person you’re working with because feelings may get involved things may get taken the wrong way etc.
I can’t lie tempers get going at times, but I always will try my best to reel it in & make sure things get taken care of not every situation is perfect but all you can do is remember that this is business & to remain solutions orientated always!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Devin Gatling aka DMG aka Cryptoboi, I specialize primarily in graphic design, filmmaking, photography & fine Art I went to Nassau CC where I studied photography & graphic design, then attended Vaughn College of Aeronautics & Technology where I studied airport management | air traffic control.
I’ve always been into art since I was young I would say my mom got me into it mostly giving me a greater appreciation for it as I got older but it was always like more of a side thing & hobby to have fun with. I know you see the aviation part & it may throw you off but Im a super big lover of aviation, worked in that industry for about 6-7 years and initially planned to be an air traffic controller / ramp controller.
Services & products I provide are photos, videos, creative direction, prints, NFTs, graphic design, website work, branding help pretty much. Problems I would say I solve for clients would be getting their message or branding out there communicated 7 in front of the customer to help them progress on their mission & meet specific goals.
What sets me apart is my commitment to the vision (project) also my vision on how I see things.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
I love NFTs I think the technology is revolutionary & will also be used in a lot of things we do moving into the future, I know the market is shit right now but if you really know what NFTs are & how they work this aint going no where!
As a member of the community we are actively building for the success of the industry for the future & the foundation for future people who join us.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
most rewarding aspect of being an artist is helping others, doing things I love that allows me to grow as an individual, express myself & creative abillities share them with the world and have people possibly love or hate me for it, also I would say the connections you make through it is truly just amazing, and after a while things just start to make sense along the journey allowing other doors to start opening up for you. Then it just becomes like this big snowball effect.
