We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Devin Duncan a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Devin, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
Being a business owner has come with many ups and downs as time has progressed, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Every single day is a learning process. I have had just as many failures as I’ve had wins. However, I tend to take a different approach of “losses” and I try to apply “What can I learn from this?” “How can I improve?”. With me currently being a full-time college student things can get extremely overwhelming but I know what I aspire to be in life and it tends to make me extend my grind more and more on a day to day basis. I’ve been able to experience being a business owner, while still working a 9-5. It seems pretty funny to say that out loud but I know one day I will look back and reminisce on the days I had to punch the clock. Though i’m not a fan of working a 9-5 job, i’ve been able to apply some of the work criteria and professionalism within how I operate my brand.
Devin, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Many know me as @vsnairedev, but very few know me as Devin Duncan. I am a teen entrepreneur, influencer and upcoming promoter. Just like any other male from the south, i’ve had to face many adversities in life because of the color of my skin. I’ve been able to reach many accolades at a very young age simply because I open doors for myself. I have always been adamant in regards of being successful. I know that success does not come easy and I’m willing to do whatever it takes (righteously of course) to accomplish my goals. My clothing brand, GoatTeez Apparel is a streetwear apparel brand that promotes self-awareness, while building a community worldwide. My goal within my clothing brand has always been to show people that while it is great to be humble, it’s also okay to be self aware and realize that greatness is within you. It’s not about being arrogant, its simply just self-awareness. Since launching my clothing brand in 2018 i’ve been able to also launch a fitness brand with one of my closest friends, Solomon Singleton, and i’ve also released an e-book, “School of Business: Goat Guide to Greatness” where i dive deep into my experience thus far in the entrepreneur world and things thats i’ve learned from my mistakes. The book also provides sources such as 100% trusted vendors, legal entities, social media marketing and it even goes to promote ways to maintain a healthy mindset as an entrepreneur.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
The year 2022 was one of the most difficult years of my life as I was struggling juggling the balance of college and business, I also lost multiple family members whom were extremely close to me, including my uncle. My uncle Terry Reed (my mom’s brother) was very near and dear to my heart as he always encouraged me to reach great heights within my entrepreneurship. This loss was very tough for me personally because I had lost another uncle the day before. My Uncle Terry would take me everywhere with him as a kid rather it be work, school or just simply quality time. This loss in a way inspired me to go harder. I know that it’s what he would have wanted. Shortly after, in Summer of 2022 , I was able to release an extension of my clothing brand GoatTeez Apparel into “Goat Teez Fitness”. This is also the summer that I released my e-book, all while taking summer classes and working multiple jobs to fund my business ventures. I say all of this to say that no matter how hard life gets, never stop trying. Resilience is key
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
I briefly mentioned to you guys earlier about my GoatTeez Fitness business partner Solomon Singleton. Singleton is one of my best friends that I was blessed to meet at Mississippi State University when i first came to college. I knew from the moment we met that he had a gift. Rather it be throughout his ministry or just typical conversation i’d say its safe to say that he definitely lives up to his first name (Solomon). For those who are familiar with the bible, Solomon was a man of wisdom and that is truly what my business partner attributes. I decided to bring him into my fitness business venture not only because he’s into fitness but I sort of wanted to take him under my wing. Im really big on bringing your people up with you and I feel like together were unstoppable. The fitness brand is still in its beginning stages as of right now but I really cant wait for people to see what’s to come for Goat Teez Fitness.
