Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Devin Bing. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Devin, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
The first time I heard the “Kind of Blue” album by Miles Davis, I knew that’s what I HAD to do. Jazz music magnetized me, and up until that point my skills as a pianist were mediocre at best. After that, my passion for music and focus to attain what I heard on that album was in hyper drive. My determination was unparalleled to anything I had ever wanted to do in life at that time. So I poured ever ounce I had into practicing, transcribing and ultimately performing as I evolved. Time and persistence is the key to developing musicianship.
Devin, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Today I write, produce and compose music for a number of projects included but not limited to artists, t.v. and film composition. My background in jazz is a great component to the versatility of what I do. On top of being a multi instrumentalist, I am also a trained vocalist, which allows additional perspective when producing a song that involves a great singer.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Before my present career as a music producer based in Los Angeles, I was a jazz performer in New York. My skill set grew into production and composition which opened up doors to which I chose to walk through.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
When people feel connected to a song I’ve written, produced or helped create, it is overwhelmingly gratifying!
