We were lucky to catch up with Devery Gara recently and have shared our conversation below.
Devery, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
I worked for the Schenectady County Public Library for years before opening the Art Shoppe, and I absolutely loved it. I loved my coworkers and the community, and I do miss that sometimes, but the community that has been built here is more than I ever could have dreamed, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I love my customers, and I have made so many friends over the past 2 years that the store has been open. May 16th is the 2-year anniversary! The arts community in Schenectady is amazingly supportive, kind, and just inspiring to be around. I feel so lucky to get to be a part of it.
During one of our our last opening receptions for our seasonal art exhibition, It was about four degrees outside, and I was so bummed because I thought nobody would come out due to the weather, but it was a huge turnout! Schenectady really showed up, and it meant so much to me, as well as to all of the artists that were showcased and the musicians that played for us. It ended up being an amazing night.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a professional portrait artist and the founder of Mohawk Valley Art Shoppe, a space that has been a longtime dream of mine. I always wanted to create a shop that not only supplies artists with their needs but also inspires creativity and community. I love being able to showcase local artists through our seasonal art show that we put on with Last Nerve Tattoo (across the hall) where we donate ALL of our 30%commission of sold pieces to a different local charity. People get to admire and purchase local art, support artists, AND and an amazing cause. I’m proud to say that we have raised over $4,000 for local charities in 2024, and we hope to beat that in 2025!
When I’m not busy running the shop, you’ll usually find me at the easel. My studio is actually part of the store! I’ve been painting professionally for over 15 years and have worked in a wide range of mediums, though my heart belongs to oil paints, soft pastels, and watercolor. My focus is portraiture, and I’m passionate about capturing the spirit and personality of each subject I paint.
What I’m most proud of is how the shop has become a place for community. People don’t just come in to buy supplies, but to talk art, share their work, and feel at home. We want everyone to feel welcome, supported, and creatively energized.

Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
I’ve never really been a fan of NFTs. I understand the appeal of digital ownership in theory, but it seems to be more about hype and profit than genuine artistic value. I also have concerns about how many artists had their work used without permission and how impersonal and transactional the whole thing feels.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My mission is to get as many people involved in the arts community in Schenectady as possible, help artists sell their work, raise money for amazing charities (Our current charity is the Child Advocacy Center of Schenectady until July!), Meet other like-minded people, and have a blast while doing it.
