Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Deven Bromme. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Deven, appreciate you joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I knew that I wanted to pursue a career in Hollywood when I was 25 years old. I had been asked to be in a play and I was instantly hooked. I loved the energy of my fellow actors on stage, and was impressed by how multi-faceted they were. Not only could they memorize their lines, but help build a set, too! I learned about the importance of continuity and how pivotal each department is to a production. I was excited to learn that being involved in theater extends far beyond acting, and that I could be a crew member or potentially produce movies as well!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Deven Bromme and I’m a native to Duluth Minnesota. I graduated from Duluth Marshall in 2006 and have a degree in Business Administration from the University of Minnesota Duluth. I moved to Los Angeles at 25 in pursuit of a career in the film industry, and started out making ice cream sundaes at Ghiradelli in Hollywood. For film premieres, Ghiradelli would work with Disney’s theater, El Capitan, so I would make sundaes for the stars as my first real brush with fame. From there, I made friends with other artists and creatives and was able to land my first job as a location manager on a feature film in Julian, California. As a location manager, I was responsible for finding locations that fit the script and working with the local police department to navigate road blocks and traffic control among other tasks. It was a challenging position for someone so fresh in the industry, but incredibly rewarding! From there, I relocated to Atlanta GA where I had the opportunity to work on Stranger Things, The Walking Dead, and Dynasty during my first year in the south. I joined the local 479 union for film workers and started dabbling in other departments that interested me. Since then, I have added the positions of rigging grip, electrician, greensman, set dresser and production assistant to my resume after having worked on a plethora of productions in Atlanta over the past 6 years. During my time on the CW show “Legacies”, I became connected with my agents at JPervis. I feel so fortunate to now expand my resume to the front of the camera as well!
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My mission may be somewhat selfish, but I’d like to make my home state of Minnesota a filming destination for the industry! My time in Los Angeles and Atlanta have provided me the opportunity and experience of working on some of the biggest shows in the industry, and for that I am eternally grateful. With the current tax incentives up to 75% in Minnesota, there have been numerous film projects finding their way north, and I feel optimistic that more will be on their way soon! We have a lot to offer to this industry, and as we build up a resident base of production crew, that will enhance the appeal to potential film producers.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
As film makers, we have the opportunity, privilege and responsibility to use our crafts for the greater good. Movies and social media alone can be a powerful tool to shed light on current social issues and events. As a child, I was diagnosed with OCD and major depression, and I remember watching certain movies over and over again as a means to escape the thoughts I was having. I would watch Austin Powers on repeat, or Hollywood classics like Laurel and Hardy and Abbott and Costello. I thought to myself “if I can create something that can help a child escape hardships, even for a few hours, what greater gift is there?” It is a great privilege to work on movies for a living. It can take some time to become a stable career path and is certainly not for the faint of heart. Despite the demands, not many people get to make magic for a living and I’m grateful everyday for the opportunities film has given me.
