We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dev Wulf. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dev below.
Dev, appreciate you joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
It start with Willie.
I was around the age of four when a re-run of Austin City Limits, 1981. There was Willie Nelson, singing Whiskey River in those cross-flared lights caused by old television footage. I telling my mother how much i wanted to be like “that guy on tv.”
I spent a lot of years growing up in church, playing in praise bands, while sneaking off to play in punk, emo, even hardcore bands. …yes, jet black hair, band tees, all of it. But it wasn’t until 2018, when an old friend of mine shook my tree and gave me hard truth that I needed to hear. I had found myself doing a lot of talking but not really a lot of walking. But It led me to take a hard look in the mirror and not soon after that, I took a job in West Oklahoma for about a week off Route 66, where I secluded myself in a Holiday Inn after hours and wrote a handful of songs and took them straight to the studio. And I’ve been doing it ever since.
Dev, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Dev Wulf and I’m the keys and vocalist for in the band Texicana. We’re a few friends who got together for the sole purpose of starting a band. At the time we were all in our own musical corners, but we really had a desire to play some rock n’ roll. Beside me is my long-time friend, Chris J Norwood, as co-lead and guitarist. Chris ‘CP’ Pitts, on drums and vocals and Kelly Huffman on bass. We’re proud about how we started early on, we wanted to bring a Tom Petty -Rock that blended with a Southern Americana… Grateful Dead meets Black Crowes sorta of vibe. Our two available EPs. No Good Reason and Little Bit Of Trouble, are currently available everywhere and we have more music coming out later this year.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Every time we complete a recording and get our first mix, I always get this high of excitement. All of the hours of take after take, getting every detail right finally begins to pay off when i can listen to it in my car. I’ll play it on repeat just to re-live the journey and process it took to complete a record. It reminds me of how much the band and I can bond over music.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
You can’t elevate yourself in life without friends to bolster and support you and even pull you up. It’s good to have people to call your bluff and set you straight.
