We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Deundra Jones a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Deundra thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
I came up with the idea of having a natural growth oil when I had my daughter in 2020. I really didn’t know what products would be safe for her hair. So I started researching different natural herbs and oils that would help her hair grow and not be too strong. I started using just Black Castor Oil on my daughter hair first. I started to a difference in her hair. Then I started using Black Castor Oil on my hair because I had started to experience postpartum hair loss. I had solved the problem of growing my hair back from postpartum and growing my daughter hair . But I still feeling like something was missing. So I started to add other natural herbs to the black castor oil. And that’s when the “Growth Oil “ was made. I was feeling so accomplished because while creating my growth oil I had three things I wanted it to stand out for. 1 was the smell. I didn’t want a strong smelling oil. 2 I wanted it to be a follicle based. Meaning I didn’t just want it to sit on your scalp. I wanted it to be a deep penetrating oil that would go down into your scalp and starts the growth from your follicles. 3 I wanted it to help all types of hair loss. Cancer patients, people with Alopecia , people who has medical hair loss due to medication. That was my unique approach with starting my business. And when I seen that my growth oil was actually working and helping my other peoples hair grow. It got me very excited
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn not being consistent. For a long time, I would start projects, lose focus, or get discouraged when I didn’t see quick results. But I realized consistency is what separates ideas from success stories. Once I committed to showing up every day — even when I didn’t feel motivated — everything started to shift. My audience grew, my brand became recognizable, and my confidence increased. Ebonique Goddess Boutique really started to flourish when I stopped treating consistency as optional. I had to unlearn bad habits — like procrastinating or second-guessing myself — and replace them with routines that honored my goals.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
One of the biggest tests of my resilience came after the birth of my daughter. I went through postpartum hair loss, and it really shook my confidence. I had been doing hair since I was 13, so my hair had always been a big part of who I was — it was my art, my passion, and my business. Suddenly, I was losing something that had always been my strength.
On top of that, my daughter had a dry scalp issue that nothing seemed to fix. I remember feeling helpless and frustrated, but something in me refused to give up. I started researching ingredients, experimenting with oils and natural remedies in my kitchen. It wasn’t easy — I made mistakes, wasted batches, and questioned whether I was doing the right thing.
But I stayed consistent. I kept showing up. And that consistency paid off — the oil I created not only helped my daughter’s scalp but started to restore my own hair. That was the birth of Ebonique Goddess Boutique.
What began as a personal struggle turned into a purpose-driven brand helping others who’ve experienced the same pain. That experience taught me that resilience isn’t about never falling — it’s about how you rise, how you learn, and how you keep moving forward, even when no one’s clapping yet
