We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Deuce Tyrell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Deuce thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
For two years I’ve able to earn a livable wage through streams, royalties, paid shows , sync gigs and doing jobs for local businesses. It’s not easy by any means. It’s stress. You feel overworked at times. But ultimately I’m fulfilled.
Deuce, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
People ask who Deuce Tyrell is. Well it’s complicated. The term “seeing sounds” is an understatement when it comes to producer/engineer/artist Deuce Tyrell. Doing music since the age of 10, the North Carolina native has explored many music genres and types along the way including Rap, Rock, Pop, and R&B. At the age of 24, I took another step further into pursuing his dreams as a producer and also taking his rapping seriously. When he’s in his studio, he puts together music that creates an entire vibe and becomes the foundation of his expressive talents. Having influences from artists like Dr. Dre, Timbaland, Pharrell Williams, and Kanye West his versatile style,
layers of sound and vibes that make every song stand out.
In 2022, I was awarded the Carolina Music Award for Producer of the Year and has produced for various artists such as Teia Elaine, South Rome, JOOSELORD, Alicia Marie, Sitch and many more. Deuce is the Music Director & Lead Engineer for 4 Phones Ent. at The Phone Booth in Durham, NC. I help and develop the extremely creative artists’ group of 4 Phones Ent. Deuce Tyrell most recently showcased his talents at the RaleighWRLD SummerFest ‘22 where I performed with the live band New Band on The Block.
Music is my heart and definition of a therapeutic outlet. I recently
completed the production of artist NunAfterHours’ rock album. Through hard work, I plan to increase my growth, wealth and creative masterpieces in the
moments yet to come.
Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
I think it’s a great way to make money however my generation is always waiting on the collapse of society. What happens if and when we’re forced to live off the grid? Physical art would hold value even in the apocalypse. That’s the way I look at it. No shade
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I’ve known about Fiverr for about 11 years now but I wish I had it or something like it in 2009 when I decided to do everything out of pocket
