Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Destiny Soria. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Destiny, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I’ve known for a long time that most people haven’t accepted me. I’m autistic with ADHD. People like me don’t really get chances to show what we can really do. We can act, sing, play, and other amazing things just like everyone else. General society sees us as difficult beings, and we are by their standards, and we can’t help or change that. Frankly I don’t want to change just to “fit in”. I’m happy with who I am. I face my own challenges, as being both autistic and having ADHD makes it hard to control or express my emotions and moods in ways most people are used to doing. But I’m still here and I love myself and what I am. Even as a Native autistic artist, it is hard to focus on doing one thing or learning new things, or even just gaining more understanding. It’s frustrating when trying to explain to others about me and what I’m trying to speak of. So, I made my own filming production company, to support those that are like me and give them and myself chances to work and thrive in the entertainment industry. I’m making my own films, commercials, and photo shoots for the world to see what we can really do and have the gift to do so.
Destiny, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Destiny Soria, award winning Native American Kickapoo filmmaker, director, and owner of Lady Destiny Productions LLC, an emerging production company that made its debut producing several films. One of which, VHS Violence: Bootlegged, is on Tubi, along with my short films. I’m really proud of “Christmas Slasher,” which is the company’s first feature film, and it’s already earned multiple accolades and awards. I have brought my wonderfully horrific vision to life by taking the helm as director, producer, writer and lead actress. I portray the film’s lead, the emotionally distraught and confused Alita. As well as being a talented and accomplished actress with nearly a hundred productions to my credit, I’m a model, dancer, and singer who has always had an affinity for storytelling.
I have been in this entertainment industry for 15 years, and in 2016 made my own production company. I help others with low rates in anything they need, like reels and headshots. Making sure the quality and representation is correct for them. Making sure the right tools and rates are agreeable for them. My rates are very low, because it’s hard these days with the cost of living and surviving on. I give them a very low rate, because I was there with not enough money to buy my headshots and get reels done. I understand how hard it is to save money to get those materials for your career. So, my rates and my help are low and open to help others.
No Promised Land is on Tubi. As the lead in this drama film, I have won Best Actress Award for it. This was one of my proudest moments. The Box, a short film, got its first distribution deal this year. Soon to be on all media platforms.
Some of my defining qualities are my ADHD, autism, and being me. My learning disabilities often get in the way of my work and my creative ideas. But I love the way I am and who I am. I’ve adapted by asking for help when I’m stuck or don’t understand something. I try to write things down to not forget and make a To Do List. I’m really proud of myself and my background. I’m a Native American from the Kickapoo tribe. Kickapoo means wanderer. We are also a wolf clan. I think I can be very fierce and passionate about my art and career. I’m a very spiritual person and believe that magic is out there. I’m blessed to have it. Right now, I am getting ready to film my second feature film, “Blood from Snow”, and I’m directing a human trafficking feature film at the end of this year. Currently I’m finishing up my short film, “Deliverance of Mother Nature”. Also, I’m a lead in a horror film called “Grey Forest-The Calling” that is finishing up this February.
My production company is special, not only because it is owned and run by an autistic person like me, but I also hire and work with people with learning disability talents, just like me. No one gave me a chance because I am different and have different learning skills. I determined I was going to make my own movies, in my way and my time, with others that are just like me. I’m giving them the chance to be what they want to be and what they love. And now I am making my own movies as an awareness.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I won Best Actress award for a phenomenal work on No Promised Land, it’s on Tubi. That was one of my biggest goals to achieve. My greatest particular goal though is having Christmas Slasher be very successful and seen worldwide in theaters and a big distribution deal too for it. My goal and mission is to even put it in film festivals to win many awards for it. I want to win my first best director award with Christmas Slasher.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I just released my first ever poetry book called Beautiful Tragedy of Destiny, This Feral Heart which is on Amazon and Barnes & Nobles. All my love and heartache are poured into this collection of poems, of my life during the past 5 years. Showing my work and my love for creating is rewarding in itself. The awards, the work I put in shows through my eyes to show the world what I can really do with my hands and mind. My life story is in this book as poems of everything that happened to me in my life; from losing loved ones, getting heartbroken, and losing a child.
