We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Destiny Renee. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Destiny below.
Destiny, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I will gladly tell you about the most challenging project of my career thus far. A one woman show! That’s right, one of the scariest journeys, in my opinion, that an actor can embark on. The show was titled Post Midnight: All Of The Roles That Nearly Killed Me written by Mahya Green and directed by Robby Myles. In this story we join movie star, Sifferetta Jones as she celebrates the night of her ultimate career accomplishment, winning her first Oscar! She gives an unfiltered, provocative and hilarious night of anecdotes that pulls the audience into Sifferetta’s not so glamorous, chaotic road to fame. We put up a staged reading of the new work in development last October at Red Light Cafe. So many of my friends and family came out to support the work and I couldn’t have been more pleased with the outcome. It was truly a collaborative labor of love in every aspect. The writer Mahya Green and I worked together for about 9 months prior to the production to develop Sifferetta’s character and storyline, and my goodness was it a fun and crazy ride. This story consisted of several interesting characters such as an ex boyfriend that stalked her all across the globe, his wife that also accompanied him on their shady shenanigans, a lover into kink beyond her capacity, crime, schemes, fights, parties, riches and so much more. I’ll let the beautiful poster designed by Devi Wells speak for itself. Honestly, I was scared to take on such a task and to produce my own work is no small feat but we did it and received amazing feedback in a post show talkback so that it may be developed further. Sifferetta’s life was full of huge losses and beautiful triumphs. I admired her resilience and dedication to never giving up on her dreams despite every force that would stand in her way. I saw a lot of myself in her character and it was an honor to be in her shoes. There were some after hours themes within the performance hence the name Post Midnight. We wanted it to feel like an intimate late night comedy special that invited audience participation. I had to ask the crowd if they knew what nipple clamps were while my mother sat in the front row! This role took me out of my comfort zone but I was pushed through to the other side by everyone who had faith in my ability to engage with the audience. I’m so thankful for Nyrobi Moss styling me, Robby Myles jumping in to direct the piece adding his charm to a wild roller coaster ride of a script, even down to the venue being so accommodating to our every need. The list of support could go on and on but ultimately I left that experience reaffirmed in my capabilities as an artist.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
to spark meaningful dialogues around societal issues as well as the importance of self reflection. My ultimate goal is to incite positive changes in our community.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Oh goodness, well the first thing that comes to mind is the passing of my younger brother DJ back in September of 2021. As if living through a global pandemic wasn’t enough, let’s throw in some grief and two itty bitty nephews that are now depending on me to uphold their father’s legacy. Though I have been very intentional with healing, processing and giving myself grace, it has also fueled me to go after my dreams with more conviction than ever before. I live my life for myself but I am a family woman at my core and that loss was great, I carry it with me daily. As a family we are forever changed. However I am more aligned with a spiritual mindset so my brother is never far and we communicate often, gotta love the ancestors! I say all this to say that no matter what I will always persevere, I’m an Aries, it’s kinda part of my nature 😉
