Alright, Destiny thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Des Marie Beauty was birth from a difficult time in my life. I was going through a rough year and I was trying to find a way to deal with multiple losses in my life. I wanted to create something in my life that produced joy and happiness. I also wanted to find a way to create another stream of income. After a lot of research, I came up with an idea to start a cosmetic business. Makeup has always been a part of my life. As a little girl, I would walk around with a little purse filled with lip gloss. As a teenager, when I was faced with a difficult time I would play around in makeup to feel better. I eventually learned how to do my own makeup on myself. I knew that this idea of a cosmetic business was right for me. I started watching videos on how to create my own lipgloss. I then went on to order lip gloss making supplies and started making my own lipgloss. Once I made about 5 different lip glosses I decided to take the necessary steps to create my own brand and legalize my business. Today I am a fairly new small owned business. I thank God and my supporters for getting me to where I am today.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a new business owner as well as a college student. I am currently seeking a degree in nursing. I have many passions that I would like to pursue in the healthcare field and in the business world. I currently sell beauty products such as lipgloss, sunglasses, eyelashes, lipliners and shoe charms. I am truly passionate about my business and the products that I sell which is why I have my own set of products that I test on myself before I sell it to anyone else. I try to provide products that will bring the best results to my customers with a price that is cost effective. I am proud of how I created and launched my business all by myself in less than 2 months. The most rewarding part of owning my own business is hearing how satisfied my customers are with their products.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I wanted to give my audience behind the scene looks at what I was creating. I started by creating long videos of myself creating lip gloss. Every day I would take small snippets from the long videos and upload them to about 4 different social media platforms. I would also take videos of different content pertaining to my business and post them on a regular basis. Consistent content will always be your best friend when it comes to promoting your business on social media. Using relevant hashtags are good to put in your caption area. A few things that I learned when creating content is to minimize your videos to 5 to 10 seconds and put information on the actual video that will grab your audience attention then explain more about your video in your caption/content area. This way your audience will see everything you want to convey in a matter of seconds and not lose focus or scroll away from your content.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One thing I’ve had to unlearn is impatience. We are living in a world where we want things to come fast with minimal effort. That idea is just unrealistic. I listened to other business owners tell their story and I learned that the majority of them had to work hard for a while before they could reap the benefits of a prosperous business. I had to be honest with myself and tell myself that my business will take time to develop into what I dream for it to be. I promised myself that I will continue to learn more and build more for my company until my dreams come true.
