We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Destiny Malibu a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Destiny, thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
Hi my name is Destiny Malibu! I am a singer/songwriter/musician/mental health advocate from Malibu, California. I fell in love with music at a very young age. Some of my earliest childhood memories include spending time with my mom in the recording studio. She was a professional Latin pop star and watching her record and write music so young was a huge inspiration to me. The opportunity to be immersed in that musical environment allowed me discover my own true calling and passion for music quite early. I stepped in front of the microphone with giant headphones on for the first time recording at five years old. I started learning guitar at nine years old, and I wrote my first song at that time called “A Million Kisses”. I home schooled for a couple of years and then started going to middle school in Malibu in 7th Grade. I entered the talent show and performed this song, “A Million Kisses”, acoustically. I was honored to receive a standing ovation and I remember for weeks students coming up to me saying “my parents said you’re going to be famous one day!”. It felt so comforting to know at such a young age that not only my family believed in me, but also my community. Fast forward to today and I am so blessed and thankful to say that I have performed all over the United States & Internationally, I’ve been on American Idol, have billboards all across Las Vegas, and am living my dream. I even decided to call myself Destiny Malibu so I could honor my roots, and bring a little bit of the beach and my hometown everywhere I go. Making music and through it, connecting with people emotionally all over the world, is the most beautiful experience imaginable for me.
Destiny, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Most recently, I am really proud of my latest song release “Say My Name”. It touches on an extremely important subject for me, mental health, and my personal struggles with it. It’s an anthem of hope, emphasizing that true happiness doesn’t come from external factors like money, power, looks or fame. Instead, it’s an inside job. I wanted to create something that resonates with anyone going through similar challenges, letting them know they’re not alone and there is hope. The song encourages us to not be afraid to call out for help, and it also encourages us to be there for one another. It reminds us to be that friend that says “hey if you’re going through a hard time, even if you’re broken down on the side of the road in the pouring rain, just say my name I got you and I will be there for you”. Who doesn’t want a friend like that? I incorporated both singing and elements of rap in the song because I wanted to share many details of my story, and rap provided me the creative space to do that. Plus, I love songs with dynamic changes, and for me the changes from rapping to singing in ‘Say My Name’ keep the song very entertaining. We have gotten an amazing response to the song so far and I’m really thankful to know that people are resonating with the message. What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I’m incredibly passionate about music because I believe it’s melodic medicine for the soul. It’s remarkably therapeutic, and I’ve always used it as an outlet to express my emotions and thoughts, sort of like turning your own journal entry into a song. Music has always brought me immense joy, and when I see it bring that same joy to my fans, I’m reminded why I feel it’s my purpose in this world to keep creating until my last breath. What truly inspires me is seeing how people react to a song I’ve written. Music has a unique power to make us feel less alone in the world. It’s a universal language that brings people together.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
On my free time I absolutely love psychology, nutrition and fashion. Those are some of my favorites things to stay up to date on. I absolutely love psychology and I think the educational resources available online not only help me build better relationships with the people around me, but it also gives me a deeper emotional understanding of myself and others for my songwriting. Some of my favorite life coaching mentors are Matthew Hussey, Breeny Lee, and Margarita Nazarenko. Books wise I am always reading something about self help. Currently I am reading “How to Talk to Anyone” by Leil Lowndes. Nutrition and exercise is also super important to me and I love going to the gym and learning about new information in the health world. Fashion is also something I’ve grown to absolutely love in the last few years. I think it’s fascinating how the clothes we wear not only affect how we feel about ourselves, but also how people receive us. And when you feel good about yourself, you attract better things into your life. All of these categories combined dramatically impact who I am not only as a person, but as an artist.
