We recently connected with Destiny Griffith and have shared our conversation below.
Destiny, appreciate you joining us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
Taking risk to me is the equivalent of taking a leap of faith and hoping….just hoping that you’ll land on all ten toes. Recently I resigned from my position as a massage Director to solely pursue my career in music. Here I am an independent artist and creative in Cincinnati, Oh, a full time mother who all the responsibility of managing and financially sustaining her household while pushing her dreams is in full effect.. Facts that I don’t take lightly at all. I took a risk and resigned from the best paying position I’ve had since ever working a job. I did it because I believe in ME. God blessed me with a gift to heal. If not, with my hands, it’’s with my voice. I came to a point where I said I will no longer work to make someone else’s dream a success, it is now my time to put 100% of my efforts into my dream. Make my Plan A work. So far I’ve learned that being an entrepreneur is not for the weak, and if you don’t work no one is handing you money so you must be at attention at all times. Constantly working towards your goals, doing your research, being visible, making the uncomfortable decisions . I’ve booked more gigs on my own during this time and received a few calls for some major opportunities . One being asked to sing the National Anthem for The Cincinnati Bengals primetime football game against the Kansas City chiefs,… just when things look like I need to go pick up a job, get an email or a phone call that changes my perspective. It’s not easy…at all. But taking the risk is worth it.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I go by Destiny L., in the industry. Since I was a child I’ve been singing and writing poetry. My very first job was working at a nonprofit called ArtWorks, in the Voiceworks project. I got paid to sing, write music, and perform at various venues. I started singing BGVs for a few local artists who had motion in the city of Cincinnati booking shows and performing with a band in 2016-2018. Once I performed my first show in 2018 at a spot called PRVLG, it’s been non stop since then. My style of music is based in soul and R&B with an influence of Jazz. I’ve been called “the Classic Singer”, and “Powerhouse Singer” where I’m from. I take pride in that, I take pride in my gift. I find that my purpose to heal with my voice and my art is what sets me apart from other artists. Whether I’m singing a song that encourages peaceful reflection, love and relationships, or putting some sass and attitude behind letting people know just who you are. I think as a mother and a woman after her own dreams, it’s important for me to stay true to my art and my passions. I’m proud of each and every magical.
Is there a mission driving your creative journey?
Its simple to me, the goal is to build a legacy for my children. Create generational wealth, financial literacy, resources, and financial freedom for those i love the ,most, Provide them with the tools I never had to help them better navigate their dreams, while teaching them how to not only maintain that but build upon it. I dont want them to have to sacrifice doing what they love for a means to survive. I want to be the example of that, showing them to never give up, never quit. just find another way to make plan A work. Its worth it to me. More importantly, I wanna see me win. I owe it to myself and my late parents who loved and supported me from conception.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part of being an artist is unapologetically creating, releasing my art, and being an inspiration to the masses or even just one person.
